Getting Exactly What We Deserve
As a true fan for over 30 years, I’ve seen this movie before (And you have too), Because we are acting in classic Miami Hurricane form(that means you as well Gary Ferman, BoT, et al), we are focusing on style over substance yet again. Because we collectively focus on irrelevant, if not outright ridiculous, factors in hiring a coach, such as the fact that a candidate is an Alum and went to Columbus HS in Miami, and not on actual coaching accomplishment, knowledge, skills and ability (Xs and Os), we are going to get exactly what we deserve.
Mario is the low risk/low reward option.
With the best talent on the West Coast, a ton of Nike money and great facilities, Mario Cristobal is 35–12 as head coach of the Oregon Ducks - Not even close to what the old Chip Kelly Oregon Ducks used to be BTW. To speculate that he will somehow take the next step to become a Playoff And National Championship caliber team is fantasy and laughable.
Anecdotally, with all of the California quarterbacks, he hasn’t recruited or had a game changing QB since Justin Herbert left.
Manny is Manny; Mario is Mario.
Mario Cristobal will be incrementally better than perennial 7-5 Manny Diaz at best and, with no accomplishment calling plays or making game plans on either side of the ball, will 100% be at the mercy of hired Offensive and Defensive Coordinators. He will lose 2-3 games every year and Miami will become a respectable Tier 2 (vs a Tier 3 or 4 team today) team like Wisconsin, Oregon, Oklahoma State and Iowa.
Lane Kiffin is Higher Risk/Higher Reward
Attack me and this post now, but save it for 3-4 years from now when we are buried in a slightly better state of mediocrity and stuck in a 10-year coaching contract with $60-70M left to pay. You think things are bleak now, wait until that moment when you realize that we made a huge mistake by not focusing on actual and factual coaching fundamentals (just ask Nebraska how bringing back the prodigal son has worked). Fundamentals People! Listen to that grumbling of uncertainty deep in the pit of your stomach...it’s saying ”we should’ve hired Lane Kiffin”, the higher risk higher reward option and dramatically more accomplished than Manny or Mario.
That is all...Conscience is cleared.
