After a solid year, they’re starting to realize his response was the correct one.
LA Times compared Florida’s response to California’s. “California imposed myriad restrictions that battered the economy, and have left most public school students learning at home for a year. Florida adopted a more laissez-faire approach decried by public health experts — allowing indoor restaurant dining, leaving masks optional and getting children back in classrooms sooner.”
The NY Times, on Sunday’s front page, explored the positives of Florida’s early reopening, from the booming real estate market to FL’s low unemployment rate. “Much of the state has a boomtown feel, a sense of making up for months of lost time.” They note that FL’s unemployment rate is 5.1%, compared to 9.3% in CA, 8.7% in NY, and 6.9% in TX. “That debate about opening schools? It came and went months ago. Children have been in classrooms since the fall.”
DeSantis about to parlay this into a 2024 presidential run, gonna suck for Floridians to lose him as governor, though. Republicans have gambled that the death toll is worth keeping commerce flowing and keeping kids in school, and it’s becoming obvious to even partisans that they made the right call.
