This season should've been a strong won in terms of wins from the simple standpoint that we have the easiest schedule we've had in a decade. After losing to VA Tech & Ga Tech in 2 of the last 3 games we see that there are no easy games for us. Our roster is greatly lacking depth as well as stud starters. The good thing we all know is the best talent is here in our backyard, but the obvious rub is that we can't land the top kids unless we show them we're heading in the right direction/winning games. That's our catch 22- we can't win currently & we can't land stud recruits until we win.
The only time we've had strong classes in the last 3-4 coaching cycles was when the new HC's had their first recruiting classes while we could sell the future of that HC's tenure. Now the shine has worn off the U brand. It's not a desirable HC gig, & no longer the place recruits go to play to win championships, so then how do you get back to the top? It's now been 20 years since our last great HC. Our facilities have improved although we'll never be at the level of the richer SEC schools, but the real disadvantage is that the higher ups at those schools have 1 goal which is... winning!
After the last game of last season, the best word to describe my feeling as Canes fan would be - helpless. Then by the grace of the football gods we were thrown a life line when Richt pulled the retirement move & spared us this season with him as HC & gave us new hope/opportunity. Whether we like Manny or not as HC he's not going anywhere for at least another 1-2 seasons, so our only hope is that he can save our program. The way for him to do that is do it is to recruit his ass off & land some studs, but that won't happen unless we win. There lies the catch 22 of Canes football & it doesn't look like it will end anytime in the next few years.
