Why are we so surprised that we've lost certain top recruits in the last few years? The fact of the matter is we now have a higher academic standard and we don't bend the rules like we used to. Some schools, particularly in the SEC outright cheat....they pay star recruits and their families big $$$ or they guarantee family members jobs on campus.
The NCAA is a farce...if they investigated recruiting practices in SEC (aka, redneck, inbred conference) several of those teams (particular two in Alabama) would have to be handed the DEATH penalty. Now, that we're at it, I know an ACC team in our hicksville capitol that also cheats...
