For those of you who remember Chuck Dowdle, former channel 10 news anchor who now lives in Georgia, he brought out some interesting facts.
1) Georgia had not won an SEC title in 20 years before Richt was hired.
2) Under Richt, Georgia is tied with LSU for most SEC Championship game appearances (5).
My take: UGA is not the power program with unilmited funds that people think it is. They typically rank in the middle of the SEC in spending and are dwarfed by Alabama, LSU, UF and Tennessee in spending. Also, consider that when UGA won its title in 1981, they were playing in probably the fourth best conference at the time behind the SWC, Big 10, PAC 8, and many good independent teams. SEC today is nothing like it was 30 years ago.
