The fact that offices were closed in Mississippi & Alabama today for Confederate Memorial Day shows how far behind the times the south still is.

Why would a young black athlete, or an evolved and conscientious white one for that matter, go play football in a state that doesn't respect them as people and celebrates a past time where they and theirs were enslaved? You think they care about you? Once they've used you up, it's on to the next. You think anyone is going to help you find your way or get a job in 10 years if you blow out your knee senior year there?

Miami was the first major football program in the south to integrate. A Cane is a Cane for life. Regardless of color. Miami, the school, the city, the community... it's about diversity.

Put up for your city. Don't let them drag you backwards. Alabama? Clemson? Gainesville? You're just meat to ol' Billy Bob or Nick Satan. It's all about the U. Be strong. I'd beg a coach like Richt to take and guide my kid. I'd TRUST him. I don't understand why anyone would leave with how things are now. You can be home, win championships, get a first class $60k/year private education at a program that GRADUATES its players with REAL degrees, and be mentored by some of the finest coaches and leaders of men ever assembled.

It's a Cane thing, others just don't understand.

Been saying that for years it's perplexing. As a black man and father of two young boys it a shame that these kids don't understand what happens at these schools i.e social environment, and the "what if factor" like you mentioned in regard to injury or just not making it to the next level.

Anyone who responds negatively to this post is insane or they feel the same way it's such a shame honestly. Why would a kid want to play for those universities. I also saw where Alabama still had a sorority that was whites only until here recently. LSU had a group of 10 Guys at a tailgate when they were spewing hate and racial language look it up on YT. It's embarrassing no amount of money would be enough to send my kids to those institutions.

Ignorance and lack of outside exposure to the real world is all I can say. You have to remember a lot of these families are gerenerations old and most have never left the counties they live in. I will give you an example, My wife's family is from Corinth MS, a small town that is in NE Mississippi. Her grandmother who is 88 years old has moved in with us because she cannot care for herself on a day to day basis. When I tell you that in 88 years she has not been outside a 50 mile radius of her home more then a dozen times its the truth. She will tell me that over the years Their idea of going to the "Big City" is when they either went to Tupelo MS or Memphis TN. On the flip side my wifes Mother hated the back woods, good ole boy network of that area and vowed to get out of the there, never to return(Which she did for the most part). This almost can go into the reasoning of how a SEC school can continually get 65,000-85,000 in attendance, The sheep know nothing better...

1% of white People owned slaves, thus all white People in the south are racist, and we all know the civil war was over slavery!

If black athleats never went to another southern school, or any black person, I wonder what other shameful past of this country wil be waiting around the corner to remind them of it.

This is a lie

Look at the census data, and then calculate the percentage of slave holders in the South.

http://www.civil-war.net/pages/1860_census.html

The people in the South that didn't own slaves aspired to own slaves. It wasn't like half of the people in the South didn't feel slavery was wrong which is why they didn't own a slave it was because they couldn't afford it.

46% of SC

Oh, my fault it was 8% of the country not 1. I really don't care what they celebrate. I'm not a part of that nor does it bother me. I'm Indian and Irish and all of my famiky were slaves at one point. I'm considered white though.

My point is this, whatever they celebrate, I'm willing to bet they aren't celebrating owning slaves, nor are they mad that black people are free, nor do they want to own slaves of any color again. I could be wrong, but if I'm offered a ship, I'm going.

Someone posted money>pride? The foundation of hell is made with pride.

It's easy for you to spew that bullshit ass response.Show me where your people were slaves. You are a ****ing liar!!!You nor your people ever experienced the degradation, brutality, the animalistic torture , that black people have been subjected to. For you to minimalize the treatment of black people at the hands of those subhuman southern animals shows the same mentality that allowed that shit to happen in the first place. But as long as these young black men are running and scoring touchdowns for the U, you couldn't care less about their lives.**** YOU!!!

What is it you want me to prove? There were at one point more Irish slaves than black, and if I have to tell you how the Indians got screwed then I'm not sure you know America's entire history. All this is common knowledge. Your people aren't the only ones that had it bad. And you're right, I never owned slaves nor did anyone in my family. You'll get no sympathy from me.

I will say this, I love all people just the same, and I don't deny that all black slaves were treated poorly buy the English who owned them. Some Irish slaves were treated worse than black . Indians had everything took from them.

My point was this, whatever they were celebrating, I don't think it's what you think it is. But maybe I'm wrong. I can tell you this, I know a lot of WHITE People and none of them secretly talk about how they wish they had slaves, are proud of the slave trade, or hate black people and some how wish they were slaves again.

So, wtf is your problem? I don't care if it's a white dude, a black dude or Chinese running a TD. GTFO with that shit.

There are some areas of the South ... Americus Georgia for example ... where you would think the Civil War just ended last Tuesday. I was there on a business trip, stayed in the main 'historic' hotel downtown, and I was amazed when having breakfast .. had checked the front desk looking for a newspaper .. and there were stacks of the local paper .. dedicated almost exclusively to articles about different Confederate Civil War Generals. This was about 6 years ago.

As far as slavery, man that is one complicated issue. Slavery of some kind has existed for all of recorded history. First records of African Slavery go back to the 7th century, when Muslims subjected Africans to slavery through the trans-Saharan slave trade. Centuries later the Portuguese trafficked Africans .. through Muslim African connections .. via the trans Atlantic slave trade in Central, Eastern and Western Africa.

All of this took place hundreds of years before the British and Muslims introduced "Chattell Slavery" where a slave is seen as a piece of property. Slavery was abolished in Europe .. and the Brits / Portuguese continued with what seems like the final run of slave trading to the American Colonies when cotton farming started. From a historical perspective the American Slave Trade seems to be the very tail end of the "international slave trade" that for the most part ended with the Norths victory in the Civil War. "For the most part", as slavery of different kinds still goes on in parts of the African continent... with over 6 million African slaves still in existence in the sub-Saharan regions.

I really doubt that those guys waving Confederate Flags on pick up trucks .. wearing camo .. are in reality making any "pro slavery" comment. More likely they resent somebody telling them they should't have the old battle flag flying .. period.
