We’ve discussed before potential conflict between the Populist wing (Trumpers) of the GOP and more traditional Republicans (labelled as Rinos by the Populists). Well, that conflict became real in Orange County, CA yesterday.

Populists wearing orange T-shirts invaded and disrupted a conference of county GOP party members and officials. Team Orange shirts said “Going RINO hunting”with a targeting gunsight inside the O. Pushing and shoving ensued.

Security was called. No arrests were made.

Do you think this was an isolated event or predictor of things to come?

Thanks

I think much of this is a democrat myth

I know of no real Republican that is anti Trump or is not supportive of Trumps policies. A couple of outliers like Romney or Chaney who will be disposed off quickly. The overwhelming number of Republicans have figured out that any agreement with the liberals is seen as a total capitulation.

Even McConnell problems are personal not philosophical
The leaders of the party are now lining up with a Trump like philosophy. The fatal mistake the liberals may be making is focusing on Trump, running against a candidate who may not run.
Everyone who is realistic a candidate not named Trump is going to be just as Trumpy
The days of Romney or Bush are over . Except here in Texas , where George P Bush is running for State AG on a platform which specifically endorses the building of the “ Trump wall” He’s a total Trump acolyte.

Police break up fracas at Orange County Republican meeting

Protestors led by American Nationalist Nick Taurus, with growing division between establishment and far-right members.

PUBLISHED: January 18, 2022 at 6:31 p.m. | UPDATED: January 19, 2022 at 11:27 a.m.
Police were called to step in after a group of conservatives wearing orange shirts that said “RINO hunters,” with crosshairs making a target of the “O,” tried to storm a Republican Party of Orange County meeting in Costa Mesa on Monday night.
The group was led by Nick Taurus, a self-proclaimed American Nationalist who last year spearheaded a protest during a town hall for Rep. Katie Porter, D-Irvine, that turned violent. After provocation from Taurus’ group, a Porter supporter threw a punch and was arrested.
Taurus, R-Laguna Hills, is now challenging GOP Rep. Young Kim in the CA-40 House race. He’s labeled Kim, who’s been endorsed by the OCGOP as a RINO, a derogatory name used by the far-right for more moderate politicians who they deem “Republican in name only.”
The clash reflects a growing schism in the Republican party, pitting those who strive to elect GOP candidates in purple areas like Orange County, and those on the far right, who remain fiercely loyal to former President Donald Trump.
The party said on Jan. 12 that because of the coronavirus surge attendance at Monday night’s OCGOP meeting — which was aimed at endorsing candidates for the 2022 election cycle — would be limited to members of the Central Committee.
“There are important endorsement requests that must be voted on, but we recognize the spike in covid cases across Orange County,” the announcement said. “It is important that we as a party take care of business, but we must also take care of ourselves and each other.”
But some local Republicans didn’t agree with that decision.
Photos and videos shared to social media show a couple dozen people wearing orange RINO shirts in the lobby of the building where the meeting was being held. A witness told the Register one member tried to push past people at the door, grabbing at the handle to get inside. Police then are seen directing the protestors outside, while other people are waved by and allowed into the meeting room.
Once outside, Taurus is seen in videos, wearing a “make America great again” hat, arguing with GOP Latino activist Jesse Suave over amnesty for undocumented immigrants. Taurus supporters and Suave engaged in verbal clashes, with shouts to “back the f— up” and saying “what are you going to do?”
Costa Mesa Police say they were called to the meeting at 6:39 p.m. Monday on reports that a group of about 20 demonstrators were refusing to leave the “private political meeting,” according to department spokesperson Roxi Fyad. Officers contacted the demonstrators, told them to take it to the sidewalk, and they complied, Fyad said.
No one was detained, she said, and police weren’t aware of any physical altercation.
A spokesman for the county GOP offered a written statement that included this:
“The Costa Mesa Police Department was called when (a) group continued to disrupt our meeting and the business of the venue.
“As a party, we welcome a healthy debate of ideas. That cannot occur in the manner these individuals conducted themselves. The safety of our members, guests and staff are of the utmost importance to our organization.”
Taurus has been involved in multiple protests that have turned physical in the past, including free speech rallies at Cal State Fullerton and Orange Coast College in 2017. Videos circulating on social media also show him disrupting a 2020 racial justice protest in Yorba Linda. In that video he is seen stealing and ripping up someone’s Black Lives Matter sign. His social media posts tout conspiracy theories about the Clinton family, the “gay mafia” and “anti-White racism.”
After the incident at Porter’s town hall, Taurus said in a live Instagram video that someone from the Republican Party of Orange County sent an invitation for his group to attend the Democrat’s town hall and “press” Porter about what she’s doing to help eastern O.C.’s 45th District. Now, Taurus said via social media, his group is being shut out by the same party.
Brian Burley, an OCGOP Central Committee member who’s running against Porter in the new 47th District, said the crowd was loud but calm when he walked into the meeting. He said he never had any safety concerns, and everyone was gone by the time he left at 9:45 p.m.
Burley had asked party Chair Fred Whitaker in a public letter Jan. 5 to postpone the endorsement meeting following the death of party leader Kelly Ernby. He clashed with Whitaker last election cycle, when he was facing Michelle Steel in the CA-48 race, over the party making early endorsements of establishment candidates.

Great point, 17.

The ideal Republican candidate will be right enough to gather support from Trumpers but not so strident or ideological so as to alienate independents and those suburban voters who voted for Biden.

Targeting RINOs will be self defeating. It will scare the middle even as it motivates Trump believers.

Youngkin in Virginia threaded the needle. Congrats to him. Will others follow or will the true believers goof up this coalition within the GOP?

Trump is not a typical conservative.
He’s always been pretty libertarian in his views
He’s just a Nationalist .
His top guys included a Gay a black, a Jew and an Indian
He’s against foreign wars if they have no benefit for America.
Nothing Youngkin has said or done conflicts at all with the Trump philosophy. Neither has DeSantis .
The effort to eliminate Trump for 2024 is going to backfire on the Dems. If successful, a guy like Youngkin/DeSantis/Holly will emerge and their entire strategy will disappear. Like it did in Virginia. They will be campaigning against a ghost. But still the spiritual leader of the party .

So, guys, will the anti RINOs rise up and cause a serious GOP schism? Or, is this Orange County fracas just a fringe event?

Whaddaya think?

You say that but obama beat mcain by putting him in a box with Bush who so many people on both sides were over.. Well that and class war fair.

How many times did we have to hear mcain tell people that he’s not bush? Hell, even trump put jeb in the same box as his brother and it worked.

i’m starting to get to the point where I think there’s a TON of voters out there that don’t watch the news or research anything , aren’t into politics at all that just look at what’s going on in the world and vote opposite of who ever the president is at the time and who ever has the cool factor when they speak. Clinton lacked the cool factor and biden was suppressed to where a lot if his voters didn’t realize what a fake, sleazy, nincompoop he is.

Say what you want about obama but he was always calm, cool and articulate. Contrast that to bush who was no brain surgeon, now seems like Shakespeare in comparison to biden and way more professional than trump. We’ve had some bloopers. All Trump had to do was just be disciplined and filter him self. I get that his following loves his brash aggressive unfiltered style but it’s not like any of his loyal following was at risk of not voting or voting for biden.

unless trump comes back with a different approach, he stands no chance. Take a page from bidens book. Sometimes saying nothing is better. Trump has enough people that can deliver his message and fight the media with out turning people off. Trump being banned from facebook and twitter is probably one of the best things to happen to him.

all he had to do during the debates was let biden expose him self for the bumbling idiot he is and instead he exposed him self for the unhinged narcissistic asshole he is while biden just kept quiet and under the radar.

Your reaction to the Orange County fracas?
Cortez,
I find it interesting that while the sinking ship SS Biden presser was taking on water, you post about a minor Orange County political cat fight? The good news is with Biden having lurched so far left and been so incompetent, there is plenty of room for Republican agreement. As to RINO's, there is not really a RINO wing of the party. Just a few egotistical whiners that are mad because other Republicans are more popular than them. Middle school stuff! So a guy like Mittens is mad because Trump did what he couldn't. He is such an attention whore that he sucks up to the leftist media to treat him as a hero for a day. The same leftist media that slandered his record when he ran against Obama.

There is no broad RINO wing, just a few back bench politicians. I am sure there are more Orange County illegal aliens that voted Biden in 2020 than there are Romney/Cheney/Kinzinger supporting Republicans in Orange County.

Yep well said . Very well said .
The whole concept of RINOS being a force in the party is a made up democrat canard.
They are all leaving .
George P Bush is reflective of the new Republican.
Liz the traitor is being financed by the those child molesters led by fake ex republicans. The left tries to promote her as the Trump alternative, even though she agrees with most of Trumps positions
But she is a hawk , a war monger. As Tucker says she hasn’t ever seen drone she doesn’t want to launch
The only division in the GOP may involve foreign wars . I couldn’t care less about Ukraine and it’s border dispute with Russia. That’s their problem. They have been disputing this for 1500 years.

Charlie Baker, gov of Mass. the bluest state in America is a multiple term republican gov. However, his policies are all in line with the progressive left. He is the model to measure a RINO

Yeah Hogan In Maryland too
Collins in Maine
Romney
Outliers mostly Northeastern
Other than Mitt , they likely are the only Republicans who could get elected in their states .
Better than Progressive Democrats

Can someone tell me WHY a full blown liberal progressive would know absolutely ANYTHING about the thoughts and values of a conservative ? Roflmao. Nothing but an attempt at a self aggrandizing Trap. Please Liberals try and explain and convince yourselves of the " Great job" Prez Poopy Pants has done, then explain that. Spare us of your panicked conjecture as you approach the next elections. You were WRONG on Biden, you're Wrong on Covid, and Wrong on everything you have Touched 🤣 😂 🤣😂🤣😂😁

So, guys, will the anti RINOs rise up and cause a serious GOP schism? Or, is this Orange County fracas just a fringe event?

Whaddaya think?
The real rift is in the Dems camp where the Marxists are at odds with Manchin and Cinema. They can't pass BBB or the so called "Voting Rights Act" which is nothing but an attempt to federalize all elections.

In the new Quinnipiac poll Brandon's approval rating is down to 33%. And that will go even lower as we approach the November midterms.

In his latest speech he practically gave the Russians permission to invade Ukraine. Every time he gives a presser he sticks his foot in his mouth. This is gonna end very badly.

On the subject of 2024 and the democrat primaries. All but Jill and Hunter agree that they cannot put Joe up there again. So there are currently three schools of thought within the party.
1) A small group that thinks they can push over Kamala if the party shuts down any primary dissent (aka opponents) and supports Biden. Then before the convention, Joe announces he won't run and Kamala is chosen in a back room. Most believe this highly unlikely as most demi power brokers understand what a disaster she is.
2) Same concept as #1, but with Hillary being annoited at the convention. This is considered the most likely option. Hillary is strongly pushing it as she does not want to have to compete in primaries. She has the support of the traditional power brokers
3) A truly open primary process. Many fringe groups want this as they believe their candidate will have all the answers. The smart money guys want no part of this. They realize the party doesn't have many potential candidates that have mainstream appeal. They are terrified of a race to the bottom between the likes of AOC, and Pressley. They would have to try to present far lefters like Blumental or Newsom as electable moderates. But the angry progressives will say anyone but a white man. The party shattering would be highly likely.

What say members of team blue?

I like your structure of the potential struggle to nominate the next Dem presidential candidate. My thoughts:

* Joe has it in the bag if his presidency rebounds over the next 3 years and he remains healthy. Both are big ifs.

* Agree that Kamala and Hillary are disasters. Too many people hate them before a campaign even begins.

* New candidates? Newsom is center-left within the Dems, more central than Bernie, Elizabeth or AOC. His ”packaged” style might attract some buyers. Pete Buttegieg is probably the most talented. Also center left. Being gay is no big deal in Cali. Elsewhere? I also like the little known Gina Raimondo, the current Sec of Commerce and former Governor of Rhode Island. Capable and pragmatic. Lastly, don’t count out Mitch Landrieu, the New Orleans mayor who is in charge of implementing the infrastructure spending. He has some Bill Clinton in him…Southern, charming and smart. Black voters could warm to him.

2 1/2 years to go to see how things evolve.

There is some truth to what Cortez is saying, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. A lot of Republicans don’t like to admit it, but most of the Republican leadership is part of the swamp. Changing colors like a chameleon. Talking one way, but governing another way. More voters are starting to catch on.

All 3 are terrible options. The Dems have no answers for 2024. You can bet that a Republican, whether it be Trump or someone else, will be elected president in 3 years.

A Republican, maybe so. Trump? Never again. I think you are underestimating his power to: unite divided Dems; horrify independents and bring suburbanites out to defeat him.

The hatred for DJT is real and enduring. His current approval rating is the same as Biden’s at 41%. Not a winning number.

A recent CNN-ABC poll shows that if the two were running against each other right now Trump would win by 10 points. Biden is becoming more unpopular by the day. The man that promised to unite the country is doing the total opposite.

It's not just his incompetent policies. It's now personal. Yesterday a reporter asked him a tough question and Biden didn't know he was in front of an open mic. Biden said, "What a stupid son of a bitch".

It is these kind of mishaps that are making Biden more and more toxic.

Majus. Wassup with you?

I cited an actual GOP fight in Orange County, CA. You’ve ignored it and declared it as ignorant.

can you expand on your logic?

thanks.
Sorry cortez, I used inappropriate words. You have been thoughtful in your posts on this thread, regardless that we disagree.
However as pointed out, media loving Rhino’s are leaving or forced out of the party.
As for biden running again????
Seriously???

Yes, I think Biden will run again if: a) he’s reasonably healthy and b) his poll ratings get at least to the high 40’s in the next 2 1/2 years. Two big ifs.

I can’t recall a primary challenger to an incumbent President since LBJ. RFK and Eugene McCarthy were the challengers, ultimately causing LBJ to drop out. Can you remember other challenges?

If Biden doesn’t run, the Dem primaries will be a food fight.

New Democrat plan for governing through 2024. Threaten US Citizens they better do what they are told or Joe will leave and Kamala will be President.

Yes, there’s plenty of tension within the Dem Party. Bernie, Elizabeth and AOC push the agenda to the left. Manchin pulls it center-right. Most are in the middle.

Thats ok. However, Biden has to be a bigger leader as the guy who is clearly in charge, choosing the agenda and pushing it like hell. He isn’t doing that. He’s acting more like a senator than the President.
