Former Miami Hurricanes defensive lineman Tony Cristiani died on Saturday, the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame announced.
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of two-time Canes All-American middle guard Tony Cristiani, who was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 1991,” the team said in a statement posted to its Twitter account. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Melissa, and the entire Cristiani family.”
Cristiani, who was 71, died at his home in Sarasota, surrounded by family members, the Hall of Fame announced.
Cristiani played for the Hurricanes from 1970-73 and was a two-time All-American and was inducted into the UM Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
Cristiani racked up 279 total tackles in his tenure with UM, including 102 in his senior season. He had at least 32 sacks during his Hurricanes career, although sacks were not an official statistic during his time at Miami.
