You want to ban all these guns... Have at it- but the mentally disturbed psycho killers will always find a way to mass kill. A homemade bomb, driving a car into a crowd, poison, etc...

Banning whatever doesn’t do jack shit unless you get to the root of the problem- having the most comprehensive, complex background checks for owning a gun COMBINED with mental health reform.

There were so many red flags with this POS murderer the last 4-6 years. Nobody did jack shit.

Agree 100%, these maniacs going to kill regardless. Hot pots, cars, planes, guns etc!

The solution is not simple. It's not just guns, its not just mental health. There are so many layers to this issue.

Taking the approach that we can't stop everyone so we shouldn't do anything is foolish, why have any laws?
You're absolutely right that its impossible to stop someone who wants to cause harm, but should we not even impede them? Don't you think every one of those staff and students would have preferred him to have a hand gun, knife, or even a homemade explosive? If I had to take my chances, I'll take them with those over an AR-15.

That said, simply banning guns isn't the answer and quite frankly I haven't heard too many people even propose that. Tackling these issues will require efforts in multiple areas perhaps starting with gun control and mental health but that alone will not be enough. People need to learn to pay attention to the signs and speak up. Law enforcement agencies need to handle complaints better than they have in this situation, where maybe this could have been prevented.

As someone who attended Douglas and grew up in Parkland, I'm not going to sit back and watch politicians sit back and do nothing. I don't have the answers but I know maintaining the status quo is not going to work. It's not the time to rush to extreme solutions, either, but we cannot sit idly by and do nothing. We all need to stop with the partisan bullshit on both sides for a little bit and work on solutions that make us safe. Both the left and the right will need to give up a little to work for the common good.

Simply stating that guns are not part of the problem is as foolish as saying the only problem is guns. Let's accept that the answer never lies in the extreme but somewhere in the middle.

Yeah that's true but it doesn't make sense to me that an 18-20 year old can't go to Vegas and gamble in a casino or go to a strip club but they can legally purchase an AR15? The system is broken.

The FBI ROYALLY effed this up. For God’s sake they had actual Cruz’s statements given to them by that YouTuber person. There was red flag after red flag on that POS. Nobody did ANYTHING. The system is broken alright- our intelligence agencies are a joke right now.

That still doesn't explain how a then 18 year old can walk into a gun store or gun show and legally purchased a fuggin AR or AK and all of the ammo that he can afford.

What about an 18-20 year old who lives in woods?? He can’t protect himself because of some asshole?? Don’t make sense that argument

Purchasing a single bolt action shotgun ot rifle for hunting purposes is a far cry being able to purchase a fully automatic assault rifle designed for the battle field and there is not a gotdamn thing that you or anyone else can say to make that shit make sense.

Ok say there’s 25 wolves or bears, what then?? However with that said, do I think any asshole should be able to buy an AR-15? Hell no, however they have a place.

Yeah in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The bottom line with the gun control argument is that there is a middle ground that most people agree with. More extensive background checks, make bump stocks illegal, keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill etc.

The problem is the power of the NRA in my opinion. Any dem that wants sensible gun control is labeled as a politician that is going to "take all your guns away." This is an absurd statement that is made all the time and is not even remotely possible to actually do. But people actually believe it for whatever reason. On the republican side if you support any sort of gun control your campaign contributions will go away and you'll be given an F rating by the NRA.

Most people support the 2nd amendment with sensible laws to mitigate the risk that comes with people having easy access to deadly weapons. The NRA and gun manufacturers have masterfully executed their political strategy and it continues to work. Need politicians on all levels to think beyond re-election and take steps to pass sensible laws.

I’ll buy that, lucid and sincere! Great post

I said the exact same thing yesterday that the NRA has way to much juice.
Not the NRA, it’s the people who are allowed to obtain guns!! And let’s not forget there’s more people killing with illegally obtained guns than legal. We have a warped society!!

No doubt about it. 95% of Americans want to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill. Yet somehow we have executive action that made it easier for them to obtain weapons. Why is that? The answer is about $30 million in campaign contributions from the NRA.

What you guys aren’t getting is that’s the purpose of the NRA, to protect gun rights! It’s up to our elected “leaders” to make laws that work!! My opinion this all on shitty politicians

But the reason why they are allowed to obtain guns is because the NRA have politicians terrified to pass any sensible laws of any nature. Huge percentages of Americans believe in things like more extensive background checks and keeping weapons away from the mentally ill. Why can't we pass a law that addresses these things? One reason. Repercussions for politicians from the NRA.

Question. Is there any gun control proposal that you know of that the NRA actually supports?

And yes they do want to protect gun rights and there is nothing wrong with that. But does that mean we should take no steps to mitigate the risk that comes with easy access to weapons.

Doesn't mean you allow anyone to walk off the street and purchase an assault riffle. This argument that they will find another way just doesn't have much of any merit. Let them find another way. Why make it as easy as possible? That's like saying just don't lock your home or your car because they will find a way to get in somehow if they want to get in....smdh.

Look at other countries. They don't have nearly the incidents we have.

Which is why I stated the role of the NRA, who authors the laws? Passes laws?

That's only for Trump. They've given millions more to Senators and Congressmen and women.

Of course politicians do. But as long as the NRA has this power over them nothing will happen. One of two things needs to happen to pass any sensible gun control. Either the politicians need to get some courage and not worry about NRA repercussions or the NRA needs to change their hard stance on zero gun control.

Call me cynical but there is almost no chance of either happening. Politicians on both sides have no courage for the most part. And the NRA and gun manufacturers are making too much money to alter their position.

I know. I was just referring to the Trump donations because of his executive order that made it easier for the mentally ill to obtain weapons despite 95% of Americans thinking that's a bad idea.

Call me crazy. I'm going to take a wild guess here. I expect absolutely nothing to happen about this regarding guns and the NRA...and this isn't a genius opinion. It's based on the fact that people like John McCain get over 7 million dollars from the NRA. They gave the Trump campaign 21 million dollars. If you think these people are going to do something you are pretty naïve or just plain stupid.

Absolutely correct. If they refused to do a thing after 1st graders were slaughtered then this will just fade away like all the others.

It's a brilliant political strategy. When the shootings happen you say it's a terrible tragedy, say you're praying for everyone, and say it's not the time to talk about gun control. Then just wait for the story to fade away until the next shooting happens. Rinse and repeat. It's been the exact same playbook for years. But it does work I have to say.

Hopefully Trump won’t follow Obama’s lead after Sandy Hook and he actually do something except fake cry!

Yep....have dems in their pocket too....just not quite as many.

Why didn’t Obama handle gun control when he was in office?? You know Obama have you ever asked him?? With all the ties you have to government officials can you find out for us?? What’s does Evan and the Sherriff family think of guns??

Whoa ... that kid didn't have "an assault rifle". An "Assault Rifle" is a rifle that has a FIRE SELECTOR switch that enables the rifle to fired a). Single shot b). A three shot burst (1 trigger pull and fires 3 rounds) c). Fully automatic. The AR (which stands for Armalite ... not "assault rifle") that is sold to civilians is a simple semi auto rifle that fires a round every time you pull the trigger .. it its NOT a full auto assault rifle. Nobody can walk off the street and buy a fully automatic weapon .. those are very limited and strictly controlled .. serious background checks, special licenses, and very expensive. Armalite designed that style of rifle when they were bidding on a new weapon to replace the M14. The STYLE is a very common one and there are semi auto AR type rifles chambered in regular .22 caliber and a myriad of others .. but they are not "full auto assault rifles".
