Joer and Advarkas have been right all along on ESPiN

I think that people are reasonable to make the point that ESPN's decline has resulted from a variety of factors such as the rise in social media content, alternatice outlets like hulu, emergence of FoxSports and specific sports networks (NFL Network, NBA Network, etc...). That said, ESPN's far left liberal political agenda has clearly been an ACCELERANT for its decline. It has been openly hostile towards both Republicans and decent minded middle of the road Independents who are tired of the coastal far left liberalism which ESPN has continuously tried to ram down America's throat.

It's fair to say it wasn't the sole factor but I remember many dismissing it as ridiculous and a non factor, the way ESPiN shifted left that is.

I can speak for myself, and it has definitely affected my viewership .

It's been reported, it's all cord cutting. It has zero to do with a shit product and has nothing to do with NFL network and MLB network being far superior.
No effect at all. This must be fake news or Trump's fault.
Not only Republicans but regular conservatives that don't want Liberals shoving their political views down our throats.
Yes, Sir.

^^^^^^
This!

I work in politics, but I don't espouse my views here. Neither should ESPN.

As someone who works in Investment field - amazing that any company would risk alienating 40-50% of their client base for owners political agenda. Not just ESPN..most of the "entertainment" industry. I've tried to cut back on all my expenditures that benefit the hypocritical "cultural elite"

The only way ESPN loses money is if you cancel your whole cable subscription. If you stop watching ESPN and watch FOX News instead, ESPN still gets your money. ESPN is losing money because people cancel their cable, usually for other reasons than a perceived ESPN liberal bias.

I just think regular people are sick and tired of being told what to think... Being called racist, sexist, homophobic and whatever other name the left can come up with if you disagree with THEIR thinking... Having all this crap shoved down their throats... So they are walking, no protests, no outbursts, no internet campaigns... Just walking away from the hate filled propaganda...

That's what the radical left doesn't get, when they spew their message and meet little to no resistance they think they are winning, but people are just tuning them out... You can't argue with idiots, so why even try?

No troll. Can you provide an example of their political views being on display. I know where Disney stands but I never see it on ESPN. I have never noticed it. I dislike ESPN becaue they talk so much and show short highlights. I don't see how they have any competition because every time I turn on Fox sports all they have is UFC on.

Well you don't have to look any further then the Caitlyn Jenner incident, Michael Sams, all the race talk... Hell turn on the lebatard show and wait ten minutes you are bound to hear them talking some race bullsh!t.... When they are talking about sports, I like that show. But it is way too much BS now... I won't even turn it on

I think it is amazing when you have poster, after poster, claiming that one of the main reasons they do not watch ESPN anymore is due to the fact that they shove politics down your face, yet despite all this, other posters say it has nothing to do with it.

Like I always say, when the truth is difficult to accept, some people seek another explanation. And it is usually one that makes them feel a little better about themselves

I'm surprised to hear anyone still watched ESPN for anything other than live sports.

I never really noticed a political agenda. But then again I stopped watching when I was 13.

What self-respecting man watches other grown men argue for 8 hours over who should be MVP? [logs onto Canesport for first of 8 hours of talking about a 17yr old QB's weight]

I haven't noticed a single political tone in anything ESPN has ever done, and, IMO, if you see one, you're seeking it out, not having it "rammed down your throat".

SEC Bias, repetitive programming, viewers leaving due to cord cutting....I see all that. But I don't wake up in the morning looking for political overtones in the content I read/watch. I simply don't care, I just watch for the content of what I choose to view. And when I watch ESPN (which is less than in the past for the simple fact of sports news is readily available in many more places now), I don't feel in the least bit that they're ramming politics down my throat. I'm a white man, and a Republican, and I believe if you have a problem with ESPN's "politics", you have some further deep rooted issues that prevent you from watching sports coverage with an open mind. JMO.

I find it funny the majority of the best posters on this board are all on the same page here, yet the most annoying trolls seem to fall on the other side of the bridge. Hmmmm

Not take anything away from AJ and joer, they definitely were outspoken about this being one of the primary reasons ESPN is dropping viewers like mic's. But there were many others on the train citing or suggesting their left turn over the years was costing them viewership.

Anyone who tunes in to ESPN to watch sports saw it coming.

Wrong.
When companies stop running ads on ESPN or any network it hurts that network specifically.
Pretty simple.

Non buying the other resources/options as an excuse. ESPN is was a juggernaut of a corporation with Disney backing and little to no competitors. I'm sure their sources saw these other options emerging long before we did and had every opportunity to either buy them out or branch out on their own as they've started to with ESPN 3, etc but could have done a lot more.

The ratings are plumitting because no one watch's ESPN for anything other than the games anymore because their shows just suck for a number of reasons. It's that simple. There shows just suck.

Ex, Mike and Mike is on right now as I type this and no one is paying any attention to it because it sucks. That's a problem. Just so boring, predictable, and redundant. Funny thing is their other shows are the exact same thing just different characters in different settings but same old bs different days.

Even Murdoch is cleaning up the cesspool at Fox. It's called progress!

So there are these "companies" that actually select people to allow them to monitor and record what they watch....I'm sure you have heard about "Nielsen ratings".....well, they are still around only way more tech savvy than the old calling and asking days (I put an excerpt below). Now they send out a "monitor" device that actually can tell what you are watching by hearing the "unique" broadcast tone from every TV in your house or connecting to them. It can even recognize recorded shows and commercials. It downloads the information every day. I happen to know this because I have been selected before. You actually get paid $18 per month to allow them to "infiltrate" your TV life!

So, what does this mean for companies like ESPN? Well, advertisers get this information and their contracted price for advertising is directly related to actual viewership, not "subscriptions". So if you lose 10% of your audience, the "advertising fee" is directly affected. So instead of getting $100,000 for a 30 second spot, you might only get $75,000. Add that up times 30, 40 advertising partners and you can see why this would put a big dent in any Media Company, yes even ESPN.

Nielsen ratings:
"Electronic and proprietary metering technology is at the heart of Nielsen audience measurement. In addition to capturing what channels viewers are watching on each television set in the home, our meters can identify who is watching and when, including “time-shifted” viewing—the watching of recorded programming up to seven days after an original broadcast.

Chosen at random through proven methodology, Nielsen’s U.S. TV families represent a cross-section of representative homes throughout the country. We measure viewing using our national and local people meters, which capture information about what’s being viewed and when, and in the major U.S. markets, specifically who and how many people are watching. We also have TV set meters in many local markets, and we collect more than two million paper diaries from audiences across the country each year during “sweeps”—specific periods during the months of February, May, July and November. To measure video content viewed on mobile devices, we have expanded our panels to incorporate census-style data from third parties in order to capture the breadth and depth of consumer usage.................."
