Watched film on their big win over Clemson and a couple of points worth noting:

  • Dino owned Dabo...and most importantly owned Brent Venables. Syracuse never trailed in this game and outgained Clemson as well as winning the time of possession battle. Syracuse lost the turnover battle and it was a costly one but also came very close in the first half to scoring two more TDs with one negated by a penalty and the other a Clemson goal line stand leading to a FG. It might sound crazy but Clemson was lucky to keep the game as close as it was.
  • Their QB Dungey has very good control of the offense and can beat you with his feet and his arm. Unlike the Tech game, they can get the ball downfield. They negate any defensive line advantage because they don't huddle so substitutions are limited. Clemson was completely gassed at the end of that game and couldn't stop the RPO. It almost seemed as if they gave up on that final drive where they needed a stop and Cuse just ran out the clock.
  • Steve Ishmael will be the best receiver we see all year. Remember him in HS at NMB and the guy is gonna wreak havoc on our defense unless we get both Redwine and Delaney back healthy. Also, they love to run a TE wheel route off a fake WR screen to draw coverage up, then go over the top. Ravian Pierce went to Plantation and was a total mismatch for Clemson all game long. These guys are motivated and want to show us up at home for sure. Diaz needs an answer for both.
  • Defensively, Syracuse can be exposed. They completely pinned their ears back once they saw how hobbled Kelly Bryant was and absolutely teed off on him. Personally, I think Clemson abandoned the run at times and should have just pounded it all game long but hindsight is always 20/20. Having Homer and even Choc instead of Walton is a mixed blessing. While both aren't home run threats to the extent of Walton we need to manage the clock and sustain long punishing drives that will wear them out. We cannot afford to be streaky in the passing game and with the tempo of their offense we must avoid the 3 and outs. I might get laughed at for this but I almost wish we would go under center on first and second downs and go with the goal line offense. They would not be prepared for the full house backfield. Just bury them with physicality.
This is the best case scenario scheduling wise. We got lucky they snuck up on Clemson instead of sneaking up on us. They remind me of Toledo but with more talent and a slightly faster pace. The blueprint is there for Manny but we have to keep them behind the chains and get pressure. The only time Clemson's D was in control was on third and long and even then they broke off a few. Cuse must be forced to drive the field and be kept out of the end zone settling for FGs. No broken plays for quick scores and nothing easy. Call timeouts strategically in the first half if we need to for personnel changes only. Fake injuries...whatever to slow them down.

The field needs to be slow also. I'd drench that thing and let the new sod grow. This is a speed team built for turf and the indoors. It won't be easy and they are gonna make us look foolish at times. They are built to negate line advantages and frustrate the crap out of deeper and more physical teams. It's another one of those find a way to win games so a quick start would help out. Don't want to have to rely on Langham for a third week in a row.
