Most of you realize how incredible a run the Canes had with the 58 home game winning streak and the amazing success we had in the 80's 90's . After 20 years of mediocrity the expectations of yearly greatness have faded. College football has changed radically since then. Facilities ,coaching staffs at larger Universities have become leviathans .Recruiting has become a 365 day nationwide hunt with helicopters, NIL deals and likely additional illicit incentives from the experts on cheating.
What we had was a perfect storm with a more wide open prostyle offense and a defense that emphasized speed and attack rather than size and hold your ground. But the rest of the nation caught up. There are supposedly lesser ACC teams with faster guys than we have now.. Some of them have the young innovative coaches we had back in the day. The portal is bringing more parity and talent distribution to keep teams from hoarding players on the bench. We saw one last weekend in Jermaine Johnson.
Has the S Florida athlete become problematic? Has demographic shifts diminished the prominence of South Fl Athletes? Or is it the lack of a Coach with the knowhow and Charisma to resurrect greatness?
I think we can win a NC if we get the right coach and the administration ponies up. But I don't see the yearly dominance we had coming back in the future. It was a once in a lifetime happening and I was glad to be along for that incredible ride.
