Hat’s off to anyone that had the balls to play with BB. Don’t care how talented you are. It would be like great history judging you in real time.

i mean, what if you mess up and he looks right at you in mid song? Then again, what if you don’t and he looks at you and smiles?

BB was the King
No BB - no Clapton , Paige , Beck etc
Think Clapton is more responsible for making BB famous than other way around. When Howlin’ Wolf came to England to play with the new breed of white British blues players and cut a record for Chess records, Clapton said he wouldn’t be part of it unless Hubert Sumlin ( Wolf’s best friend and longtime guitarist ) was included. The black blues were dying out in early sixties, records didn’t sell like they had and the publics musical tastes had changed. Motown, Beachboys etc. were on the rise. The merger with British blues guitarists bought the Blues legends back, bigger than ever. As for Gary Moore he and BB made a great live album together. Moore and Rory Gallagher are the two great Irish guitarists, love them both.

There’s something to be said in touch/tone. Lot of guitar players and listener’s think that the guitar is like a machine or computer that has to be figured out. It’s not. Playing guitar is no different than singing. You’re fingers are only doing what you’re feeling at that time. You can play the exact same solo over and over again but when you add you’re mood to it, it’s a little different every time. Those subtle differences change the solo to where people go from appreciating the solo to feeling the solo. It’s hard to explain. I like both technicians and purists. The best is when you have a technician that’s a purist with a story to tell. Traditionally the best storied musicians get the most out of their solos because they have the most they’re trying to get out and it’s real and not just practiced or copied. Bb king’s music is a legit piece of history/art.

no disrespect to those other bands you mentioned because they were telling their story too. With the blues though, it’s the emphasis of rock and roll. Always surprised the blues aren’t more prevalent today in it’s purest form. The blues today really have gone away from folk lore to just rock and roll. Who can be the hardest as oppose to who can just let their fingers tell the best story.

check out smoke rings by the mills brothers and you’ll get what i’m talking about. What did it take for these guys to get to that point and lay it all on the line? Robert johnson drunken hearted man , you can hear it in his soul and there’s nothing for him to hide behind. Do or die time recording.

A couple of comments
Yeah Clapton made BB a lot more well known , but he took much from the black blues guys , including Johnson , Howlin and BB
BB was the guy back in day
As to Rory , I met him in the student government office in 1973 , he played at the U in one of our great on campus concerts
The U had the absolute best concert bookings in South Florida, until a guy named Les Campbell decided to start promoting concerts
The list of acts was amazing

Off the subject but one of the best concerts I saw while at Miami was Janice Joplin performing on Greentree. It was in the winter and chilly and her first words were, "Shit it's cold."
