Caniacs...
The ACC went 6-2 in the opening round Friday in their various regionals around the country.
Winners
Gainesville Regional: Miami 1, South Alabama 0
Oxford Regional: FSU 5, Southern Miss 2 (Noles rallied from 2-0; So. Miss is the No. 2 seed, FSU No. 3. seed. Really, NCAA committee?)
South Bend Regional: Notre Dame 10, Central Michigan 0 (the Irish are the only ACC team to host - but not a Top 8 host - and be a No. 1 seed)
Ruston Regional: NCST 8, Alabama 1 (Bama got in over Pitt, even though Pitt was 17-12 vs Top 50 teams - 4th best overall - while Tide was 8-17)
Lubbock Regional: North Carolina 5, UCLA 4 (Heels' W is 26th consecutive NCAA post-season; they also traveled farthest of any ACC team)
Nashville Regional: Georgia Tech 7, Indiana St. 6 (the Jackets needed a 5-run 7th inning rally to win. Now they No. 2 seed Vandy at their place)
Losers
Columbia Regional: South Carolina 4, Virginia 3 (USC scored 3x with 2 outs in the 6th to take 4-3 lead)
Knoxville Regional: Liberty 11, Duke 6 The Flames win 40th game, scored 6x in 4th to take 11-1 lead. Loss snaps Duke's 12-game winning streak
Other notable games: (note how many top teams struggled vs lesser competition and how many host teams are SEC)
Knoxville Region: No. 3 national seed Tennessee needs a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th to beat Wright St., 9-8
Eugene Regional: Gonzaga shut out LSU 3-0. Zags are one of the best teams out West and deserved to host. LSU one of last teams in
Eugene Regional: No. 10 (No. 1 region seed) Oregon was outhit 16-13 and had to outscore little No. 4 seed Central Connecticut 13-10 to win at home
Tucson Regional: UC Santa Barbara smacked No. 23 Oklahoma St. 14-4
Oxford Regional: No. 1 seed Ole Miss at home beat No. 4 seed SE Missouri St. only 6-3
Starkville Region: No. 1 seed Miss. St. at home beat No. 4 seed Samford 8-4
Fayetteville Region: No. 19 ranked Nebraska edged the No. 4 seed Northeastern 8-6
Fayetteville Region: No. 1 national seed Arkansas at home trailed mighty New Jersey Tech 3-0 before rallying to outscore the No. 4 seed, 13-8
There were a couple of blowouts:
Ruston Regional: No. 1 seed La Tech 18, No. 4 seed Rider 2
Starkville Region: No. 2 seed Virginia Commonwealth 19, No. 3 seed Campbell 4
That's it for now. I hope many of U will join me for Game 4 when we meet South Florida at 4 pm.
