I’m watching the early returns from the California special election to recall Gov Newsom.

* Governor seems to be safe early on
* if he survives, is it a vote for him or a vote against the recall process?
* does he have momentum or must he pivot to more sharply focus on crime, homelessness, fires, etc.?
*implications for Trump and Trumpism?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Trump didn’t run in this election even though the Democrats framed it that way because they couldn’t run on his record. Larry Elder was called the black face of white supremacy even though he grew up in South Central. How racist is it for the white elitists to say that.

I’m not that familiar with CA

What policies has Newsom implemented that have made CA a better place to live?

Fair question, Dol.

In general, Californians feel that they are in much better shape fighting Covid than we’ve seen from Florida, Idaho, Wyoming and several other Red states.

Also, the anti masking jihad of DeSantis in Florida together with attacks by Abbott in Texas on abortion and voting rights are seen here as the source of modern evil. The hatred against those new policies is profound. One major corporation (Salesforce) has offered to reimburse relocation expenses for its employees who choose to exit Texas!

In that regard, Newsome is seen by voters here as the backstop against Trump and his devotees.

Newsome is an elitist who is a do as I say, don't do as I do silver spoon type. Very close family relationship, going back years with Pelosi's family. He has never solved the tremendous homeless problem in his state. A lot of business owners are angry with him.
I agree with you that he was elected as a backstop to what Californians think are Trump policies. Californians will just live with the consequences of retaining Newsome.

LMAO except California doing better is flat out BULL$HIT and the head clown is a flaming hypocrite when it comes to masks and killed many businesses. Desantis knows the TRUTH about masks in that they are ineffective and study after study proves that. Yes send the baby killers to California, they belong there with the rest of the scum

Cortez,

Please confirm that you were joking about this option:
* does he have momentum or must he pivot to more sharply focus on crime, homelessness, fires, etc.?

He has never done any of those. It is more likely that he feathers his and friends nest with billion$ for trains to no where, mocks people of color by wearing a monkey mask, starts a fire in dead underbrush (will blame Trump for the fire) and issues new draconian mask mandates while slurping overpriced wine and writing a restaurant $2.9M relief check to the French Laundry while thousands of other California bars and restaurants get no state relief from his small business killing policies.

Newsome will go back to the policies he believes in.

Elder claimed election was rigged even before a single ballet was counted. Common conservative tactic. Trumpism at its core!

No joking.

Newsome is up for re-election in 13 months. I sincerely hopes that he pivots to the middle on key issues: crime, homelessness, fire and water. His anti Trump credentials are solid and don’t need further reinforcement.

IbisRules (above) does not understand that DeSantis is playing solely to the hardcore Trump base and is making no effort to expand that base. He’s trying to win the Republican primaries, not a general election. That positioning in Florida is seen as “kooky” in California.

Abbott in Texas is even more hated. His anti abortion drive is the greatest gift ever given to the the Dems. Support for Biden might be tepid. But the policies pushed by the governors of Florida and Texas motivate Dem voters in profound ways. Those governors are a great gift to Biden.

Who cares about mismanaged Forrest causing wild fires. Running out of water. Can’t keep lights or AC running spoiling food just blame Climate change. Heck it’s one of the reasons cited for Afghanistan debacle. Homelessness, crime don’t judge by tangibles use White Privilege. School performance failing just do what union says that’s why they give you all that money

My mom lived in San Fran for 25 years up until 2005. We went to visit quite often. We went back about 5 years ago and will probably never go back again. Are you happy with the way that Cali is being run right now?

Cortez,
Hate to inform you but re:
That positioning in Florida is seen as “kooky” in California.

Floridians elected Govenor DeSantis and continue to support him.
The recall might have gone the otherway if the votes of Californian's that voted with their feet and moved to Florida, Texas, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, etc. votes had been counted.
First racism (monkey man) and now voter suppression by Newsome.

From a practical standpoint, CA women are in zero danger of losing their “right” to extinguish a life in their womb. So, I’m not sure how Texas legislation has anything to do with the lives of Californian’s. There is really no ligit concern here for California women.

So, that leaves your point that Californian’s feel safer under CA COVID guidelines as opposed to other State’s whose governor’s are allowing more personal choice over government fiat. Perception of ones safety is important, I get it. Fear is the most powerful emotion we have.

Both of your points are fear based perceptions of citizens losing something.

What I was really asking is how has Newsome taken action to improve your life as a CA citizen? How has he made your state better?

Dol,

Bottom line: I think we all get the Governor we deserve..Florida, Texas and California. For Newsome, I appreciate:
* quick bounce back of the economy
* lower Covid infection rates and higher vaccination rates
* budget surplus this year
* strictest environmental controls in the country
* tough auto emission standards that lead the country and the world. Spurs electronic car production and sales.
* better prep for fires in the last 2 years

What I want more of? Tougher on crime, more active on homelessness, fire protection and water conservation. Our lack of rain is a critical situation. Hasn’t rained at my home since March. Annual rainfall this year is 30% of normal.

Central: this monkey mask shiz is a myth. neither Newsome or the Dem Party has launched racists attacks on Larry Elder.

801: I agree that the quality of life in SF has declined over the last 5 years. SF has a dysfunctional city government. Such a shame for such a lovely city. My mother and grandmother were born and raised there and were proud to their deaths to be identified as San Franciscans.

Central: Funding of Newsome’s early ventures and political career came from Gordon Getty, son of J. Paul Getty. He’s a leader of the Dem-oriented very rich SF residents who have helped Pelosi, Feinstein, Harris …but most especially Newsome.

There has been plenty of "U-Haul voting" going on in CA.

During the period from 2016 to 2020, CA's population grew by only 0.5%

Meanwhile, nearby States have seen much more robust growth.
OR + 3.%
NV + 7.5%
UT + 6.8
AZ + 6.9%
ID + 8.5%
WA + 5.4%
CO + 4.8%

Some recent statistics suggest that 2021 growth may actually be negative. More interesting is the type of tax payer crossing the border. CA may indeed be losing wealthy tax payers. Exporting high tax payers and importing people who receive taxpayer assistance is not a good recipe for future financial success.

You mentioned that CA has a budget surplus. Is this because of the huge federal government bail out received?

Incedently, other high tax and high spend states have already gone to a negative growth.
IL - 1.8%
NY - 1.5%
CT - 0.6%

LOL, here is the consequence of the awesome "surplus"

Ironically, California’s fiscal outlook reflects not only its extreme wealth but also widespread income inequality. Home to an array of the globe’s most successful companies and most wealthy individuals, and with a tax system designed to ensure it extracts revenue from that wealth, the irony is that the state’s financial health is much stronger than the economic security of most Californians, many of whom live at or near poverty levels or struggle to manage the state’s high cost of living.

The other part of this story has to do with the challenges of forecasting a state’s finances during a pandemic. A year ago, state leaders were expecting the state’s fiscal fortunes to fall off a cliff. One of the realities of having a relatively progressive tax system is that California’s revenues can increase and decrease dramatically based on changes in economic conditions – so-called “revenue volatility.” That volatility appeared to be working against the state a year ago. In a matter of months in early 2020, the state went from a projected $154 billion General Fund to a $134 billion General Fund with projections of further decline mid-year. Yet, just a few months later, it became clear the state’s revenues were performing far better than expected, culminating ultimately in the $75 billion in unexpected revenues the Governor announced in May.

Win-Win for me.

Either we would have had a Republican Governor in CA...good

or

CA will continue to lose businesses, burn down and be a domicile for the homeless and druggies...good

Re:

I am not going to say Newsom personally hired and scripted Monkey Woman. However there was a real pattern of racist attacks against Elder the past couple weeks. I could absolutely see the fingerprints of a Clinton style "dirty tricks" DNC affiliated group. Remember the DNC is the ethical and classy group that brought us the Paul Ryan pushes Grandma off the cliff adds.

But what Newsom did not do is immediately condemn that kind of garbage. Did he demand his supporters cease such behavior? Has Monkey Woman been arrested? Cortez you know darn well that if someone wearing a MAGA hat and monkey mask and thrown eggs at Kamala Harris when she was campaigning, that Newsom would have put all California law resources towards their arrest. He and the DNC would have demanded Trump have federal hate crime charges filed and then demand he resign because of the hateful climate. Newsom was more than happy to look the other way and accept the racist idiot vote to keep his job.

Cortez, I also find it interesting that you speak in a distanced tone about San Francisco's dysfunctional city government? Wasn't Newsom Mayor of the City? Wasn't Kamala Harris DA of SanFrancisco? Wasn't her hmmm, hmmm mentor Willie Brown also Mayor? Isn't that Pelosi's district? How exactly did SF get in such a bad way? Was it Trump's fault?

Not trying to give you a hard time, but getting to a recall election was not exactly a medal of honor situation for Newsom. Yes the recall and vote for replacement process is flawed. Newsom had no positive success to campaign on. He had to take the low road and say "look - out of the hundred mostly fringe candidates some are worse than me". Kind of like Manny saying "Don't fire me - Al Golden could be my replacement".

Did the Rolling Stones fortel of the recall election?
In the 6th stanza, the lyric is "yeah, I'm a sack of broken eggs"
And look at the video at just past 2:50. Jagger is singing with a guy that looks a little like Elder in the face? Elder does not share the dreds. Hmmm?
If nothing else take a brief afternoon break and enjoy the greatest rock and roll band of all time.

Riddle me this then, why did many Reps get told they already voted when they showed up to vote?
You didn't answer the question, why did Elder claim the election was rigged before a single vote was counted? Because he knew he was going to lose and like Trump, he was setting up his alibi.

LOL, my my you are owned by the propagandists. I didn't follow this too close but seems to me there were election rule changes for this too, Gee I wonder who they benefitted

Oh and read what I said, yeah there would have to fraud BEFORE the vote to be told on voting day you already voted

Trump set the stage and you lemmings will claim fraud for every election you don't win..
LOL, to anyone even remotely honest the evidence is overwhelming on many levels, Why do you trust the media so much when almost daily they are exposed as liars? And BTW ridddle me this how does Trump lose when the Reps made huge gains on all the under tickets?

ibis and Central.

Thanks for the civil discussion despite our differences. Couple of points:

Central: I don’t blame Trump or Republicans for the dysfunctional political systems governing San Francisco. The current DA there is the son Weather Underground criminals jailed for their violent crimes. He is soft on crime, particularly “quality of life” crimes related to drugs and homelessness.

IBIS: It is easy for presidential voting results to differ radically from more local party success. Ex.

*Biden won big in California while Dems lost ground to Reps in House seats. Why? The presidential results are tallied statewide while House seats are by districts within the state. As an example, Biden built up huge margins in the larger cities and coastal areas. But local Rep House candidates successfully flipped some Dem-held seats.

*Similarly, Biden won narrowly in statewide results in Georgia. Dems shockingly flipped two Senate seats there but were soundly beaten for House seats, I believe. That is, statewide results favored the Dems while smaller congressional districts rewarded Republicans.

Does this make sense to you?

I have to applaud you on this one. You have carried the Team Blue flag very well against well armed (with facts) opposition. Curious why the other Blues did not join you. The best you got to defend Newsom was Mike and he was pretty much incoherent today. It appears he was having an extra bad flare up of TDS.

I am sure I will soon make a smart ass comment about Newsom or you about DeSantis, Abbott or Noem. But at least a good and relatively civil debate.

BTW, is it Newsome or Newsom. I have seen it both ways by different reputable sourcesbut good sources?

Thanks, 17. I always confuse the spelling of Gavin’s last name. Turns out it is “Newsom.”

I respect Newsom but don’t love him. Many missteps. Ironically, I live only a few miles from the famous/now infamous French Laundry. Lunch for two with a modest wine? $1,200.

Before the recall, I had never heard of Larry Elder, his leading opponent in yesterday’s election. Besides claiming electoral fraud (per the Trump playbook), he indicated today that he might run against Newsom in the November 2022 Election.

Stay tuned!

In the spirit of admitting the warts of our own team. I was not thrilled with Elder as a candidate. I do like him as a radio personality. I thought it was a little hokey when he had "relief factor" adds on Fox after they had segments on his run. Campaign funds for private business promotion? I would hope the Republican's can have a fiscal conservative, socially moderate candidate for the next run. Being a minority would be a plus, but just someone strong that speaks in plain language and looks out for the middle class. The toughest part will be finding someone that respects big tech but has the courage to take them on over personal freedoms and censorship. That will be tough because there are some oligarch wannabe's like Zuckeberg and Dorsey that like having lapdog governors in their pocket. They will spend immense amounts and run absolutely vile and slanderous campaigns. But only a Republican will be able to lead California out of the burning woods. The democrat party is too inbred and compromised to its large donors..

Obviously not for random nights, but is the French Laundry worth it as an "experience special occasion"?

lol Trump made millions, employed thousands of people, lost money on deals but made more. Newsome couldn't suck his d@ck well maybe he can. lol
Trumped filed bankruptcy from a gambling casino. How in the hell can you do that? That almost seems impossible.

I’ve been to the French Laundry once as well as it sister restaurant in NYC, Per Se, one time. Bottom line:

Yes, it is worth it for a one time experience IF you treasure superb ingredients prepared and presented in a pristine style. 8-10 mini courses, each with its own textures and flavors in a beautiful presentation. Exquisite. Almost Japanese with a French accent. Perfection.

I haven’t gone back cuz over the last many years I’m preferring similarly simple ingredients prepared simply. Less pretense and ceremony. It’s almost holy or church-like when you spend 3 hours at a French Laundry lunch. It’s wonderful, but just a tad too precious.

Worth it once because the food, service and presentation are amazing.

Once again do research trumps casino was the last of 4 in Atlantic City to go bankrupt at that time due to the recession and the opening of gaming in Pensylvania and surrounding areas in 2010 and a brand new casino in New York in queens a basic case of supply and demand. People had options it’s called competition why go to Atlantic City if you’re from Pensylvania anymore when you can stay close to home or if you’re in New York and a brand new casino opens in your hometown .
does that help you out . You really need to further your education mm
You know they say you can think someone is stupid but if they post enough crap like you do you know they are .

Trump built his casino empire by borrowing money at such high rates the business had almost no chance of succeeding. Trump's casinos posted losses year after year. In the early 1990's he narrowly avoided financial ruin by taking his debt=riddled companies public and shifting his losses onto stockholders. According to financial filings, Trump pulled in more than one million for himself from his failing public company. The casino companies appeared before bankruptcy court 4 times and Trump persuaded bond holders to accept less money while he still added debt to his business. A large invester who at one time owned $500,000 worth of company stock said, "He drove these companies into bankruptcy by his mismanagement, the debt and his pillaging". BTW, the other casinos in Atlantic City thrived while trumps lagged posting huge losses year after year. Just curious, where are you from KOWBOY88?
