Gary, I don't remember in recent years each individual player interviewed being so confident about the team as a whole and especially lifting each other up to this degree. Last year we played so many freshmen and sophomores who now have another year of growth and development.
I fully comprehend the significance of losing Duke and our leader on the O-line. I don't see any set back losing Walford. We are stacked at TE and people forget that until last season with a Qb who could deliver strikes to him, Clyve hadnt exactly performed the way we are used to seeing our tight ends play.
I guess what I'm asking is considering Quan looks like a beast, Scott looks like every bit the player Dorsett was (ok at least in the spring), we have two stud backs with different styles combined with a new change up and hungry freshman coming in, a stud OL (McDermott) who missed most of last season and recently returned, a beast at LB who runs a 4.5 (Grace), and a leader in the secondary primed to take the next step to become a first round pick..........why do you feel so negative about this years squad.
Did I mention we have a seemingly rededicated Stacy Coley, an Under Armour all American in Berrios who played well as a true freshman ready to step into a pivotal roll on offense and special teams, a fresh Herb Waters back, a descent possession senior receiver in Lewis, a true Freshman that had offers from every school in the nation in Cager, and a fullback who is an extra TE/WR on the field (Herndon)? That's a drastic difference in depth and experience than last year. On top of it all we have a stud qb who has had a full season and spring as opposed to walking straight in as an 18 year old kid having to learn everyone's role on every play! All those tools are at the disposa of a more seasoned, mature QB who everyone acknowledges will be better than the season when he set all those freshmen records without even participating in spring ball!
How can people not see reasons to be optimistic? Whether these next two recruiting classes stay in the top 2 or 3 who knows, but they will be solid classes with athletes to provide even more juice on both sides of the ball.
And Redwine may make his presence known immediately. The same could be said for St. Louis and Milow. Oh and big 73 isn't a scared kid anymore either. Another youngster with experience. I know I tend to be much more optimistic based on my passion and desire to see us back in the running for national titles, but how anyone could look at the difference in talent from last year to this year based on new players and others that were not fully developed, yet played key roles as freshmen having another year to get stronger snd more knowledgable just doesn't compute with me.
We have two scrimmages to start the season and get in sync with all the youngsters to get in sync together. This year's team is better no matter which way you slice it. Why can't we get behind them and see what they can do? Geez even McDermott thinks this team as is can be in the running for a Chanlionshjp! Sure he's seeing it through green and orange goggles like me but that's a pretty bold claim!
