A couple weeks back I highlighted some stats by bcftoys.com that explains points per drive by starting position from an offensive point of view.
Defensively speaking I'm looking at TO% and PUNT%
opp. 1 yard line .136 TO, .549 PT
20 .143 .494
30 .139 .428
40 .146 .344
o40 .103 .158
30 .116 .043
20 .061 .004
10 .046 .000
1 .017 .000
TO% when viewed by the yard doesn't really change much until the offense gets inside your 20. The line of demarcation seems to me to be their 40, beyond that the %'s start to fall.
Kickoffs are of up most importance, keeping the line of scrimmage behind their 30. Also limiting big plays(20+ yards), make them earn it.
