Latest on Strong to Miami
After talking to multiple high-level people within the Texas athletics world, the support for Charlie Strong remains completely unbending. While the results of this season are 100-percent undesirable, the faith in Strong remains incredibly firm. The plan is to survive this season and provide Strong with whatever support he needs in the off-season to give his program the boost it needs. I don’t get the sense at all that there’s a movement with any momentum that would change this dynamic. Could something change if the team finishes the season limping to the finish line? Sure, anything is possible, but every important person I’ve spoken with inside the belly of the program has provided the same message: In Strong, we trust.
Multiple sources from the Miami program have confirmed to Orangebloods that some feeling out between people connected to the Hurricanes program and those with Strong’s best interests in mind has taken place in an effort to gauge potential interest in a possible relationship in the aftermath of Al Golden’s dismissal. None of the feeling out was official by any stretch and I don’t get the sense that anyone believes there’s anything serious going on behind the scenes outside of due diligence. Also, it’s important to note that we haven’t had any indications that Strong has talked with anyone himself. As I stated, there has simply been a little bit of feeling the situation out taking place. If we’re keeping it 100-percent real, this is stuff that happens in this sport all the time. Nick Saban’s people were significantly more active in talking with Texas a few years ago than anything that’s happened thus far with the Strong/Miami, but there has been some basic-level vetting occurring per multiple sources.
One of the things we’ve discussed on this site at great length in the last six weeks is that sources have confirmed to us that there are number of factors behind the scenes that could be deemed as uncomfortable for Strong. Among them is the reality that he doesn’t know who his long-term athletic director is going to be, he went through almost five months without the support of a sports information director dedicated to him (virtually unheard of in the industry), the relationship building within the Texas High School coaching inner-circles has proven to be more difficult than he could have ever anticipated, the facilities need upgrading and there’s just a general high-level of frustration that exists when you add these things and others together.
As I’ve stated numerous times over the last six weeks, the only way Strong would consider leaving Texas is if all of his frustrations create a working situation from which he wants to simply get away. When we hinted weeks ago that Miami was a situation that bears watching, it was with the knowledge of some of the internal frustrations for Strong that exist and the fact that his connections to that area are so strong that even if the money wasn’t nearly the same, it might still be something he’d consider if his level of unhappiness remained unchanged.
According to the folks I spoke with today, those inside the Texas athletic department inner-circle are aware there’s been some minimum-level reaching out to Miami for vetting purposes (just in case), but there seems to be little worry that anything will come out of it for two reasons. First of all, there seems to be a feeling that Butch Davis is both the fan favorite and in-house favorite within the Miami administration to replace Golden, and while Strong is an attractive possibility, he’s not the most attractive possibility, especially when you consider his 9-12 record in Austin. Secondly, as I mentioned earlier, the feeling among those I’ve spoken with is that Texas is fully committed to giving the all of the support that Strong could possibly desire and that at the end of the day, they’ll create an environment that will answer as many concerns as possible. This includes the following:
Rehiring John Bianco as SID for football. As we reported more than a month ago, if Strong wanted Bianco, they’d get him Bianco and that’s exactly what happened.
As it relates to the pending athletic director hire, the Texas administration is making every effort to communicate to Strong that whoever ends up in that role will be there to support him, not replace him. One source told me today that Texas would attempt to keep Strong as informed as he wants to be in the spring when the process of finding a new athletic director begins in earnest, although that source told me that Strong hasn’t made much of an issue, if any, over the matter behind the scenes.
When the season ends, Strong will have whatever he needs to make sure he gets the offensive coordinator hire he needs to fix the issues on that side of the ball in an emphatic way.
If Strong wants more support staff, all he has to do is ask.
Current acting athletic director MIke Perrin has gone out of his way to try to address every concern that Strong has within the program. I can’t stress enough that the athletic department and those inside the inner-circle are making an all-in effort to satisfy all areas of concern. One person I spoke with today mentioned that Perrin’s No. 1 job from now until he is ultimately replaced is to fully support Strong.
When the season is completed, Charlie Strong might not have a blank checkbook to make his offensive coordinator hire, but it won’t be far from that if that is what is needed. If it costs a million dollars, it’ll cost a million and UT won’t blink. “That sounds about right,” one source told me tonight. “That seems to be the going rate."
