There is a quote in one of the 30 for 30 films about the U that I think about a lot. It is when Butch Davis was being interviewed about being on probation, and he talked about not being able to afford to miss on recruiting. He said he only recruited players “who wanted to be at Miami.”
I think about that quote in these 2 situations:
1) When posters on this board discuss the remarkable amount of Cane stars recruited by Butch that were not highly recruited, or highly rated
2) when I’m watching TV announcers talk about a terrific South Florida athlete who is starring at UCF, USF, Louisville, Wake Forest, Pittsburgh, or some other school that recruits South Florida. The commentators always make the obligatory remarks about how the player was not recruited by Miami, Florida, or Florida St, and due to that reason, had something to prove and was playing with a chip on his shoulder.
In those moments, I always say to myself, why don’t we have those kind of players any more? We used to. Players who wanted to be at Miami, and who played with a chip on their shoulder.
