Mitch is using his refusal to raise the debt ceiling as a way to embarrass Biden. He and his GOP colleagues didn’t just suddenly become fiscal conservatives after the high spending four years of Trump.

Over the past 50 yrs., the government has raised the debt ceiling 57 times! trump suspended the debt ceiling in Aug.2019 through July of 2021. At the time of the 2020 election, the national debt stood at over $27 trillion, the fastest rate of increase of the national debt of any modern president!

"only consisted of Gov Necessities to keep it open"? Trump signed legislation which suspended the debt ceiling for 2 yrs. and raised spending by $324 billion. During Trump's term, a four-year period in which Republicans forgot to pretend about the deficit and spending, Congress raised the debt ceiling three times.

Failure to raise the debt ceiling could cause the US to default on its legal obligations for the first time In history. If that happens, the US credit rating will go down resulting in higher interest rates on our debt. Deadbeats have to pay more to borrow! Those higher interest rates will cost US taxpayers billions over billions over billions in future pay downs of our debts.

6 trillion of DJT's 7 Trillion debt was pandemic related. Income to the Treasury was up heading into Covid. Lastly, it is Congress that spends the money in this country.

You all understand the urgency to "raise the debt ceiling" which allows for more borrowing to pay "debt already incurred" does have something to do with build back better because while it pays current obligations it does so by authorizing more borrowing. The Republicans and most economists believe spending this kind of money (Build Back Better Plan) at this time, on the heels of over 6 trillion in pandemic spending is irresponsible and foolish. That is why Republicans heels are dug in. Even the bi-partisan (not that good) Infrastructure Bill at 1.2 Trillion is considered to be excessive at this time. And didn't Senate Republicans negotiate in good faith with Biden on the $1.2T lnfrastructure bill? Didn't the Senate pass in a Bipartisan fashion with 69 votes that bill, then neither Biden nor Shumer stood up for?
