The night they drove ole dixie down........ thoughts

I think it should have stayed as it IS a part of history. However, having these public displays with a chainsaw cutting the statue in half at the waist is distasteful and serves no purpose. It should have been removed in the middle of the night with no pre-announcement and that would have been that.

One of my all-time favorite songs by the Band.

One of the most underrated bands ever...among my favorites is..."When I pain my masterpiece"
My favorite band of all-time and 'The Weight" one of the best songs. I saw Levon Helm and John Prine in concert at Red Rocks in Colo. Red Rocks is an outdoor venue that up in the hills over-looking the lights of Denver. One of the most beautiful places in the U.S. to view a concert. Helm and Prine were both battling throat cancer at the time and Helm died shortly thereafter. Prine survived but later died of Covid. Both were great musicians and even better song writers.

Levon from Arkansas and only American in “ The Band “. BTW, The Black Crowes do an excellent version of “ The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down “

Ronnie Hawkins was also from Arkansas and his band the "Hawks" were once Dylan's backup band. One edition of the Hawks included Canadians Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, Rich Danko and rummer Levon Helm. They became Dylans backup band and later achieved superstardom as the Band.

Got it but Hawkins was never a member of The Band. Think he was featured in “ The Last Waltz “ I think if you’re counting him as a member of the Band then Dylan is .

Robert E. Lee said himself that he didn’t want any tributes to him or the Confederacy and yet they still went against his wishes.

Between 1958 and 1963, the group was known as the Hawks, a backing band for singer Ronnie Hawkins. In the mid 1960's they gained recognition for backing Dylan. After leaving Dylan, they changed their name to "The Band" and released several records to critical and popular acclaim.

You're correct, Hawkins was never a member once they became known as The Band.

If you guys ever get the chance check out the last waltz by scorcese. Easily the best concert dvd of all time. Crazy how good the sound and picture is when you consider the year it was filmed. Really cool interviews with The Band too. Pretty much an all star team of bands all playing the same gig in a really cool amphitheater.

i love how scorcese uses robbie robertson in a lot of his movies sountracks. The little melody from color of money get’s me pumped every time I hear it. Those guys were just legit bad ass.

Stage freight
Up On Cripple Creek, Tears of Rage, The Shape I'm In, The Unfaithful Servant, It Makes No Difference. All great songs I always related to Stage Fright because I always dreaded getting in front of the class and speaking and that one verse was so true, "But when we get to the end, Her wants to start all over again".

Don’t know if you guys ever heard this but Clapton wanted to join the band. Same when he heard music from big pink He was hooked. Robertson invited him and he showed up in Woodstock NY. He said they were all walking around in denim’s and He was dressed in British Rockstar pink silk pants. Robertson asked him his intentions and he said he wanted in. Robertson figured he might want to replace him. They never jammed Clapton moved on from Cream and the rest is history.

Robertson was the cause of the band break-up when he falsely tried to claim authorship of all the songs. This doesn't make sense when you consider the Southern aspects of their music. Lavon was the only one from the South. All the rest were from Canada.
