If we are being honest the offensive side, Richts specialty, has been a huge disappointment and disaster. Before we even get into scheme we have to address the absolute failures of this staff to identify, recruit and develop QB talent. It’s like there was a absolutely lack of any plan when it came to QB. Not going after Eason as your QB was a mistake. Being the head coach at Georgia for 15 years and having NO relationship with Lawrence or fields or their coaches is down right shameful and laughable. They were both sophomores when he got fired from GA. James Franklin knew about fields and dabo knew about Lawrence and I’m pretty sure others coaches knew about them as well since they were freshman. When Chad Morris left Tulsa for Clemson upon his 1st yr there he identified a young sophomore QB in Deshaun Watson and went ALL IN for him. Most offensive coaches identify the QB they want/need to run what they want to run early and go after them.
Now let’s talk about scheme. Forget the formations looking like everybody else’s. There is a COMPLETE lack of even trying to find ways to get the ball into the hands of your play makers. Look at the ways other offensive minds devise ways to get the ball into their playmakers hands. Look at the ways Jeff Brohm designs ways to get the ball into the hands of Rondale Moore. How about Chad Morris and how he designed ways to get the ball into Sammy Watkins hands. When Lane was at Bama and he designed ways to get the ball into the hands of amari and Ridley. We are not designing plays or ways to get the ball into the hands of Thomas, or pope or Brevin. DJ Dallas should be used more as a H-Back and not just running back. They should be designing plays where DJ and homer are in the back field together and it’s not just the wildcat. How about running the pistol diamond where the QB is in the pistol and next to him him on left and right are Brevin and DJ and behind the QB is homer. Run some plays out that formation. Put Jeff in the backfield behind the QB in that same formation besides homer. It’s maddening the creativity u see other OCs use to get their playmakers the ball and Richt is still running basic stuff from the late 90’s ans early 2000’s. It makes no sense we are running/using ( I guess) power run spread principles but are not really running them the way they should be ran. We have no H-back. Whether is Jeff , DJ, pope somebody should be being used like Urban used Percy at fla or dontre Wilson and Curtis Samuel at Ohio st and how they are using Parris Campbell now. How about how Clemson used Sammy or Artavis Scott or now Amari Rodgers. Use them on jet sweeps, reverses, bubble screens. it’s like he says your are the X your are the Y and your are the Z. This is where u lineup and these are the routes in this offense. He is using DATED concepts. How are u going to convince Jadon Haselwood that he is going to get featured in your offense like AJ green when u didn’t figure AJ and don’t feature the ballers u have NOW!
This is why NEED a established COLLEGE OC that has been putting up NUMBERS at his current school and past schools he may have been at. Don’t need a brian schottenheimer hire or a Jess Simpson type hire or jedd fisch type hire. Need a Chad Morris type hire. Whether that’s Kendal Briles, or Klfiff Kingsbury, or a joe Moorehead type. Richt needs to show humility and realize that his way is not working and that even though he may be running the same formations as other teams he lacks in play calling , desig, timing and execution. BC OC basically sat Richt down in a classroom and showed him how to call a game. Besides the trick plays a lot of their plays were set up with motion and misdirection. YOU NEVER SEE MOTION FROM US!!! Scott Loeffler the BC OC is not even that good. They wanted to run him out of town at Va Tech. Him and Addazzio said we can recruit Linemen and TE’s. They devised a scheme that will feature them. Miami can recruit skill talent but here is the thing WE DONT FEATURE OUR SKILL TALENT. what Richt does is he keeps putting a VERY LIMITED QB out there and say here is the offense go and execute it. We can not keep hearing the Golden /D onofrio excuse of “ well if one guy messes up then it messes it up for the whole offense”. We heard that for years from them about the defense. that is BS cop out for poor game planning and scheme.
