First and foremost, I thought that last night's Canesport Live was another SOLID radio show by Gary... Second, I am recalling three of what I believe were the most important talking points from last night's show. Gary, if I inadvertenly mis-recalled what you stated on the radio in my below points, then please feel free to correct me. Below are three points which were discussed last night, and I have a few thoughts on each of them.
(1) Gary's Discussion With Tommy Tuberville Gary mentioned that after the Cincinnati game, he bumped into Tuberville at the airport and was able to have a quality thirty minute conversation with him. Gary stated that Tubbervile stated the the most important thing for a Miami Hurricane head coach is to have STRONG relationships with high school coaches. I found that interesting, because Shannon struggled to have strong relationships with high school coaches during his tenure, and FoldenZook has struggled to have strong relationships with high school coaches. Frankly, if it wasn't for Ice Harris and his positive influence and impact in the community when it comes to recruiting, FoldenZook and D"onofrio would probably be getting the inner city recruiting doors slammed in their faces on a more regular basis. So, with this in mind, I think that MARIO would be able to absolutely HAMMER RECRUITING as a head coach down here, not only because was recruiter of the year at Alabama, but because he is BOTH WELL RESPECTED by local high school coaches, AND knows and understands the CULTURE of South Florida and its athletes having been raised down here and coached at FIU. That is a BIG BONUS for bringing in a guy like Mario to be head coach to replace FoldenZook...
(2) Gary's Thoughts On Mario Cristobal: Although Gary has NOT endorsed a particular person to be a head coach to replace Golden, and stated that he will not do so until Golden is fired (which I understand and respect from Gary's perspective), Gary DID say that Mario COULD BE SUCCESSFUL at Miami, PROVIDED that he surrounds himself with solid coordinators who know the "x's and o's" and schemes to implement, and that Gary believes that Mario is capable of doing that. I AGREE with this point and have stated several times that Mario is VERY SIMILAR to Golden with respect to "Managerial/CEO" skills, and is not a bona fide guru at either calling plays or implementing defensive schemes. THAT SAID, I do believe that Mario is MORE THAN CAPABLE of surrounding himself with solid coordinators because of his time at Alabama, which has given Mario an INVALUABLE learning experience. Mario is NOT HANDCUFFED to friends, unlike FoldenZook, when it comes to who is a coordinator here... We could get Mario at a REASONABLE PRICE, say $2Million, and then pay $2Million of Coordinators, $1Million for a quality OC and $1M for a quality DC, with another $1M spread out over 3-5 positional coaches. THAT is how you do it right there, and I am really starting to lean towards this type of setup:
HC - Mario at $2Million per year
OC - PROVEN OC at $1M per year
DC - PROVEN DC at $1M per year
$200K for 3-5 positional coaches per year
Total of about $5Million budget, MORE THAN A WORKABLE BUDGET to have Mario with solid coordinators working below him.
Please note that Gary stated that given the choice between Mario and Tom Herman, he (Gary) would rather have Mario hired as head coach with solid coordinators below him than a guy like Tom Herman as head coach.
(3) Defensive Scheme Talk: Thought that Gary had some EXCELLENT talking points about the LACK OF AGGRESIVENESS of our defensive schemes. In particular, some ass clown troll called up Canesport Live last night and defended Golden's nonsense coaching and D'Onofrio scheme- even went so far as to say we don't need blue chip athletes and that we would be fine with 2-star athletes who buy into the program. Riiiiiiiiggggghhhhhtttt... Gary should have cut that guy of and given him the proverbial "ASS CLOWN!" sound bite that Jose Rose and Captain Curtis drop on dumbasses who call into 560 WQAM in the morning... But I digress... Anyway, Gary was firmly on record last night by saying that there simply has NOT been the REQUISITE LEVEL of change needed on defense in five years, and that if and when Golden is fired, Gary will ultimately look back on this regime scratching his head as to how and why these guys (FoldenZook and D'Onofrio) didn't make substantive changes in either coaching personnel or scheme/system when the statistical data and "writing on the wall" clearly stated that it was time to do so... Gary also used the example of when Franklin left for the NFL, that was a good opportunity to bring in a guy who could impact the defense, and yet Golden did little to upgrade the defensive coaching staff...
Overall, I thought that Gary had some EXCELLENT SUBSTANTIVE POINTS on the fundamental issues involved in this defense, and suggestions on how those issues should be addressed, especially if and when a new coaching staff comes in after Golden.
For those who did not get a chance to listen to Canesport Live, I strongly suggest that you do so every Tuesday night. In my opinion it's a solid three hour time slot which exclusively talks about Canes football with live commercials and continuous conversation throughout the show. I've been impressed with it two weeks in a row and I will be back next Tuesday to tune and listen some more. I'll probably call too and articulate a few points as well- you never know. lol.
