First-time claims for jobless benefits in Florida jumped by 47% for the week ending Jan. 23, according to a new report Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Florida was one of only 11 states in which initial claims increased compared to the previous week. Nationwide, first-time claims fell by 10% — or 101,498, from 975,464 to 873,966.
In Florida, the number of claims swelled by 18,598, for a total of 57,824 compared to 39,226 for the week ending Jan. 16. No other state reported as large of an increase.
