Since there are some questions surrounding Mario regarding whether he will come, or if he is the guy or not, I thought it would be interesting to look at his coaching career and dig in a little bit. There are several things, good and bad, that stand out to me and let's begin with the bad.
The Bad, or questionable:
- His overall record as a head coach is 57-58
- His record at FIU was a dismal 27-47
- Questionable gameday coach - concerns that he loses to teams he shouldn't or plays down to competition
These are just a few questions raised and I'm sure there are more, but for the sake of time, I'll stop with these.
The Good:
- His overall record at Oregon is 30-11
- He has won two PAC 12 titles
- He is a recruiting beast and his classes at Oregon are top 10
- He won a bowl game at FIU!
- He is blue collar - is a tough, no nonsense, hard-nosed coach that believes in being physical and tough up front on both sides of the ball
- He's a Cane and understands what it would take to get us back where we need to be
- He is well respected in FL and especially S. FL and would kill it in recruiting IMO
- Learned and coached under the best to ever do it in Nick Saban
I'm sure I'm missing some other positives and Gary can fill in where I left off .
In summary, I believe Mario is not perfect, but he would be great here. The FIU record is not good, but he took over arguably the worst program in the country at the time. He struggled early on, but was able to take them to two bowl games and win one while he was there... Ask Butch how hard it is to win at FIU? He has a losing record there as well and his only good win was against... I digress.
Hiring Mario is a no brainer IMO. He is basically Butch Davis 2.0. - Beast recruiter, blue collar, hard nosed, no nonsense, and questionable coach on game day.
