In regards to this hot issue, doing so is a bad idea. In some US cities, due to shortages of social service workers, police officers are increasingly serving as first responders in incidents of mental health crisis and addiction, homelessness intervention and cases of juvenile status offenses. This definitely necessitates the search, hiring and training of new police candidates. With the current pandemic, more people could lose their jobs which could increase the numbers in the homelessness sector. It isnt the officer's job to be a social service worker.

Also, with the potential threat of extremist groups acts of terror, the concern is if police officers are first to arrive, what chance do they have with their standard issue handguns against individuals with automatic weapons? Terrorist groups are continually upgrading their tactics & weaponry. Police departments should be able to do the same
