POST-GAME MEDIA INO

Recap:
Toral's Grand Slam Blast Canes Past Noles, 11-0 (UM Link)
Box Score: FSU vs UM (UM Link)
Watch: Toral's Grand Slam (Watch ESPN Replay Link) Go to the 1:14:00 mark as they intentionally walk the righty Amiditis to load the bases and get to Toral, a lefty. FSU's All-American, All-ACC P is a lefty...bad decision on an 0-2 FB pitch over the plate. Big mistake...watch their C move his glove up, I think he wanted high heat. It was Alex's first career GS.

COACH G SAID IT POST-GAME

"Winning the first game certainly helps,'' head coach Gino DiMare said. "I told the guys we hadn't really played a complete game this year. ... I didn't realize, but six runs we scored with two outs in the seventh inning. And of course we played very good defense. Great complete game. I'm very happy."

1B ALEX TORAL SAID IT POST-GAME
"I feel like we kind of got the momentum going in that inning," Toral said. "It started with Evan. I'm pretty sure he struck out the side the inning before that and as a player I felt like we need to score right here. Evan just had a shutdown inning, it doesn't get better than three strike outs in an inning and coming up with the bases loaded, obviously my emotions were high and I'm glad I came through for my team."

"Everyone knows this is a huge rivalry game and obviously to put my team on top first to start the series off like that just feels great," Toral said.

"It kind of sets the tone for the weekend so hopefully we can stick with that approach throughout the lineup and keep capitalizing on moments like that," Toral said.

WP EVAN MCHENDRY SAID IT POST-GAME

"It was awesome," McKendry said. "Gino has been preaching that we are just waiting for the game that everything clicks for us and today that was it. We pitched well, we hit well, played good defense, no errors, that's exactly what we need to do."

2 STATS OF THE NIGHT
1.) The grand slam was Toral's first of his young career
2.) This W was our first Friday night victory vs FSU since 2005

Boy, after the FAU stinker on Wednesday....we really needed this...best complete game of the season so far by the Canes!!!! Great pitching, great hitting, and great D, NO Es!

What a game, what a great night to be a Cane...thanks for being a part of this game thread!

It's great to be...especially after beating the Noles!

Go Canes!

--------------------------------------

Happy Friday, Caniacs!

Well, here it is...our annual battle with FSU. Expect all 3 games to be sold out or nearly sold out. Sunday will depend on how we do. If byu some chance we are 2-0, I would think our fans will show up.

Tonight:
*Manny Diaz
will throw out the first pitch.
*Mike Martin, will be honored in pre-game ceremonies. He's the winningest HC coach in Division 1 college baseball (*see Game 3 reference below) and he's making his final trip to The Light as he is retiring at the end of this season.

Saturday Night:
*Jon Secada,
UM alum and 3x Grammy winner will sing the national anthem.
*Miami's 1999 CWS Championship Team will be honored before the game making the 20th anniversary of winning the national title in Omaha. Guess who they beat? FSU, 6-5. That ought to put a little salt in their wound but it might also fire them up. It better fire us up!

TEAM RECORDS

Miami is 18-11, 5-7/ACC while FSU is 18-10, 6-6/ACC.
We struggled and barely escaped Pittsburgh winning 2 of 3 games to take the series against the Coastal Division cellar-dweller. Then we wet the bed Wed night at home vs FAU. After blasting them 16-6 at their place last week, we lost 6-4 allowing the Owls to salvage 1 game out of 3. Even so, it was a big improvement vs last year when they swept the 3-game season series from us.

SERIES RECORD

FSU leads the all-time series 152-130- 4,

THIS YEAR VS LAST YEAR

BTW, at this time last year, we were something like 12-17 vs where we are today, 18-11.

NOT A GREAT WEEK FOR THE NOLES EITHER

Meanwhile, the season has not gone as planned for FSU. I think they were a Top 10 pre-season pick and now they aren't even in the Top 25. Losing 2 of 3 at home last week to BC didn't help. In their midweek game, the Noles lost to Jacksonville U 3-2 in 11 so they haven't had a great week either.

STARTING PITCHERS

RHP Evan McHenry vs LHP Drew Parrish

STATS OF THE WEEKEND

1.) Neither team is ranked in the Top 25. How long do U think it has been since that last happened?

2.) Chew on this: We have not won a series vs the Noles since 2008. Think about that.

LAST SEASON in TALLY - FSU Took 2 of 3 Games

Game 1:
They won 2-0 scoring 2 in the 1st and that was it; we outhit them 5-3; we walked 4x, they walked 3x; we left 9 on base to their 4; but they SO 9x but we SO 15x !!!!!! Jeb Bargfeldt went 8 innings, gave up only 3 hits, 2 runs, both earned in the first. How? They FO and K and with 2 down Jeb walks the third batter, and then, their cleanup hitter smacks a 0-1 pitch over the RCF wall and that's what won it, with 2 outs.

Game 2: They won 10-1, only 4 were earned, our only run was a Gil HR in the 8th. They outhit us only 9-7, both teams left 7 on base, we SO 10x, they SO 14, we walked 1x, they walked 5x. McHendry went 6 innings, gave up 6 hits, 4 runs, 2 earned, SO 9 and walked 4. We committed 4 Es.

Game 3: We win 11-5 to avoid the sweep. 8 of our runs were earned; They lead 3-1 after 4 and then we scored 3 in the 5th, 4 in the 6th (3 run HR by Quinones), 2 in the 7th and 1 in the 8th to ; break it open; we outhit them 13-8; we left 10 on base, they left 9; we SO 7x, they SO only 4; both teams walked 9x;

*The win forced Martin to wait another day to become the all-time winningest coach in Division I baseball history
