Hello, Caniacs:
First up: Because of expected bad weather, the Miami-Canisius game has been moved up 2 hours to 10 am Friday morning. The Ole Miss-Arizona game will follow 55 minutes after the end of our game.
But Caniacs who live in SOFLA say the regional could be rained out all weekend.
2nd up: Because I will be at work, I'm asking for a pinch-hitter or 2 who can provide s coring updates. I will post a game thread before the start of the game.
Canisius, comes to Coral Gables riding a 6-game winning streak., including 2 shutouts. They earned an at-large bid to the post-season by winning its 4th baseball championship last weekend by defeating Rider. Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) with 10 other teams, most of them Catholic schools: Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, Monmouth, Niagara, Quinnipiac, Rider, Saint Peter's, Siena,
MASCOT
What is a Golden Griffin? From Wikipedia: According to GoGriffs.com, the griffin is a "mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion." It represents values such as strength, vigilance, and intelligence, all of which befit a college and qualities that one would look for in students and athletes alike.
BTW, their team colors are blue and gold.
Check out the comparative stats between Miami and Canisius below. I would advise people not to take our opponent lightly because Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast both say hello. Besides, since when are we in a position to turn our noses up on any team? I realize the level of competition is not the same (altho Canisius spliut a 4-game series with Pitt to start the year). Even so, they have 4 batters hitting over .300, we have 3. They have 3 pitchers in their conference's top 10 re ERA. We have 1.
As I have written on this board often at this time of year, almost every team in the Field of 64 has at least one good shut-down pitcher on staff. All it takes is for that unseen guy to stymie his opponent for 6+ innings or so and the other team starts pressing with one eye on the scoreboard. That can add up to a L. I hope our guys learned a lesson from Charlotte.
