Atlanta, GA
for a new MLS franchise. Could this be our golden opportunity for an intimate soccer/football stadium?

Not necessarily. As I pointed out in a previous thread, they need political capital to get this done. So they might need to partner up with us. They can have a stadium with a lower bowl of about 25K and 40 suites that will suit MLS needs, and an upper bowl (closed for MLS, open for UM) of about 15K seats. That would put attendance at about 43K (25K lower bowl, 15K upper bow, 3K suites). Perfect for all parties.

I'll take a 45K seater FILLED to the rafters, and everybody in town fighting for tickets. That way the only way in would be through season tickets AND Hurricane Club membership levels, and we can finally operate like the big boys.

JB, soccer is awesome. I never understood the phobia some people have for it.

Like I don't like baseball, or cricket, but I don't go hating on either sport. I just choose not to watch it. It's like every time you mention soccer, people feel it's AGAINST 'MERICA! lol It's hysterical.

As illogical as it may seem, they may figure out a way to put a stadium on South Beach. They need to go big, and with the cache that Beckham brings, and the history of failed professional soccer here, it makes more sense than what appears on the surface. There's no more waterfront property left downtown w/ the two new museums coming in, and the onloy other way to capitalize on the landscape is to build it on the beach.

"We will never get out of the SunLife lease."

That is NOT a concern. That is not even an issue.

If you want to see the protoype for MLS Soccer stadiums, go to sportingkc.com.

Sorry, I had to...I've never liked soccer...

Baseball is awesome, great sport..

Happy for you guys in south florida that love soccer and pumped to get a mls team..

There's no reason the new MLS team couldn't also be Hurricanes. Does anyone still have that conceptual drawing of a campus stadium from last year?

Seattle Sounders and Sea Hawks may share the same stadium and it holds 67,000. A stadium shared by green grass teams, football and tackle, might be very feasible as a canes home. even if the stadium holds 50,000.

MLS shares costs with the University and little from the county(if they choose to help) and this is what you have

1. 50-55,000 seat stadium that is multi use for MLS Soccer and Hurricanes football

2. Also used for big high school football games, high school state football finals and soccer finals.

3. Only use the lower deck for MLS soccer games. Thats what Seattle does. Ive been there for a soccer match. The only time they open the upper deck is for big time games or when ticket sales demand they do.

4. Have the MLS team's colors look like Miami's ( orange and green) then you can set the tone of the stadium to it.

As far as the lease with Sun Life??? Have no clue how to get out of that. Maybe cut a deal that we play games vs FSU or 1 high profile game a year there.

Sporting KC stadium is the best sorting arena I've been to, in any sport. Amazing facility

These stadium threads are becoming comical. Golden, a stadium on South Beach???? You must be drunk.

This is possibly very exciting news...however could he not use Sun Life for this also? What about out on the water over by the Miami Heat arena maybe partially open air, anyone know if this would even be feasible and who owns all that land?

god guys, you realize the sight lines will suck again. far away to accomodate the soccer field dimensions. thats the issue with sunlife...

No, the issue with SunLife was accommodating baseball. Several soccer facilities are used for football and vice versa with great sight lines. Have you been to FIU's stadium? I've been to both football and soccer there, and AMAZING sightlines, you're on top of the field. Same in Seattle, Portland, and formerly Houston

they can play anywhere.

fiu, fau, flamingo park, tropical park hs fields....

not sure theyd build a new soccer facility

What makes you think Beckham has anything to do with UM? I wouldn't be at all surprised if he uses FIU if he uses a pre-existing facility.
