I'll break down some of the good and bad from the game today. There were some glaring issues but nothing that can't / won't be fixed or at least be game planned out.
Offense: OL play is significantly better. Communication was obviously better. Darling is too slow to pull and not sure why we even tried. Donaldson is the future and what an athletic freak. He'll make some mistakes here and there but the kid is the truth for a true freshman. McDermott is also significantly better this year. St Louis looked good also. Gaynor is going to be a serviceable utility guy for us all year long. Great feet, strength and uses his hands very well. I think he will replace Darling before the end of the year. He reminds me of KC Jones so much it's not funny.
We ran a lot of zone blocking schemes today which we haven't really done since Duke was in the backfield. Not sure we will see that as much against FSU though. That means Richt is more comfortable with the mobility of the OL. That takes athleticism on the OL.
Walton and Homer looked great. Don't really even need to discuss them.
Our issue on offense is going to be Rosier unless Richt can get him to settle down. He's horribly inaccurate on the long hash out throws which is what Brad Kaaya made his money on. I do not think his arm is significantly stronger than sherriefs at this point. The TD pass to Berrios was a rope but had about the same velocity as Sherriefs ball he threw on the run, which was money by the way. Rosier really needs uptempo because he's a rhythm passer which I think we will see in a couple weeks.
Defense was very interesting for me to watch because honestly speaking, BC looked very well prepared and had obviously tried to game plan away from our DL. Everything was quick drops and get the ball out. The option pass plays to the RB were probably something we weren't expecting, & in reality we ran a straight vanilla cover 2 base D just to keep everything in front. Manny knew they weren't going to compete with us talent / speed wise so there was no reason to risk the film on our tendencies. That was glaring. I thought the issues with Delaney getting picked on for a series were just nerves. He will tighten up. Amari Carter will be a starter sooner than later. He's just too talented and too instinctual to not have out there which is good for us.
My single biggest complaint about the defense was poor tackling. You can tell we went through camp in Thud because we looked rusty as hell. Lots of arm tackles and not wrapping up and driving through. Very sloppy. That'll get worked out this week.
Deep breathe guys we will be fine lol.
