I’m a former coach. Every now and then I will break our games down just to see how we did and what my thoughts are.

We are very poorly coached on offense in my opinion. There are lots of little things we don’t do.

We don’t fire off the ball on run plays, I think this is actually our scheme, we appear to want to run zone blocking when we run but we never fire off and move forward we run parallel to the line. In my notes below you will see several runs where we don’t move the line. I get zone blocking and it can be successful but you still have to be aggressive in the blocking and fire off. We catch the defensive linemen too much.

We have no communication on pass blocking, there are several times we let men run free. Someone has to call the blocking scheme and assignments, several times we let men run free unaccounted for.

We don’t carry out backside fakes, that’s a small thing but it keeps the defense honest and can let you know if there is some type of play that might work off a fake

Miami vs UVA 1st half break down

Opening kickoff special teams jogging

Drive 1

Play 1 opening drive, only Zion and Donaldson fire off the ball. The rest do some kind of stutter step like we are running a screen. Clear run. Donaldson whiffs bad. JT literally runs right pass the corner who makes the tackle to block the safety

Play 2 out to Jordan very good blocking

Play 3 run to the right short side of the field, zone blocking?? No splits, Gaynor, Donaldson, and Zion all end up on top of each other, no one blocks the back side end who easily makes the play, line did not move forward ran parallel down 37 yard line no movement forward, must fire off forward and hit the first guy that crosses your face

Play 4 back side shoulder throw to KJ nice blocking nice throw

Play 5 defender 10 yards of JT, Perry simply stood up and threw to him, why don’t we run this more???? No fake on backside, DJ and KJ literally stood and watched the play. Good coaches will make you execute backside fakes to see how defense reacts

Play 6 Good blocking bY line DJ whiffs picking up linebacker, Perry rushed, ball behind JT almost picked off in end zone, probably should have been, 1 on 1 has man beat slows down keep running across end zone so qb can lead you

Play 7 Donaldson has an ole lay block Perry gains 3 on good scramble

Play 8, 3rd and 7 screen to Harley, lineman don’t engage end (Zion and Donaldson), he reads screen and hits Harley before he lands with ball. Our OL made it too easy for him to read the play, engage him

Play 9 delay back side blitz Perry makes a great read and quickly decides to run and picks up 4th and 7, Donaldson again watching

Play 10 2nd zone stretch where we don’t block back side end 2nd time he makes tackle, 2nd time no push, 2nd time no splits, 2nd time no forward movement, 2nd time running to short side of the field.
Also Zion doesn’t even get his head across his mans body he hits his backside shoulder, that’s HS stuff, you lead to get your head in front of the man and at least make him run through you on high school

Play 11 excellent screen and blocking for Dallas to score

Drive 2

Play 1 Zion gets beat Donaldson makes nice recovery to pick up end, Perry just misses Pope, off his fingertips, nice pass blocking everyone else, should have been caught IMO

Play 2 good pass blocking drop by KJ, 2nd nice throw in a row dropped

Play 3 3rd and 10, obvious passing situation, Zion and Donaldson have men over them, there is also an end outside of Zion, Brevin is outside that man, DJ is to the right side of Perry, no communication on whose blocking the end, Brevin could have at least bumped the end, Perry could have shifted DJ to the left to block him, instead no one touches him and he runs free to Perry who scrambles but never has a shot to throw. Someone qb, our Jr running back captain, Donaldson on line has to recognize that the end on a 3rd and 10 pass play is not being blocked.

Drive 3

Play 1 slant to JT, defender still 10 yards off ball. We did a play action pass this time which allowed corner to get on JT and he broke up pass. Would have like to seen the same pass from drive 1 where Perry just throws straight to JT since corner is 10 yards off, line blocking ok

Play 2 run to right, backside again does not fire off ball, it’s a clear run, Donaldson does not fire off the ball, he catches him almost as if he’s pass blocking, his man ends up making the play, granted DJ picks up 5 it’s a nice run but if the backside gaurd fires off the ball it’s possibly a very long run. This is the 4th run where our lineman don’t move forward at the snap on a run play, it’s either piss poor coaching or piss poor scheme

Play 3 sweep to right side, 3rd time running to short side of the field ( easy tendency to pick up) blocking is again zone blocking there is no forward movement, the only reason this worked is because it was a pitch to DJ and not a handoff, DJ was able to outrun everyone to the corner, of it had been a handoff he would have gotten tackled behind the line.

Play 4 1st and 10 pass play 7 yard drop, Zion is again left on an island like he has been all year, he is beat badly again like he has been all year, there is again no help from a RB or TE, why do you keep leaving this kid out to block ends 1 on 1 and think something different is going to happen, huge loss sets up 2nd and long behind the chains now

Play 5 another drop back, this time Donaldson does better coming to help Zion, Perry just overthrows KJ, that’s on Perry

Play 6 penalty, 3rd and 19, no real hope of picking up first down, surprise we ran a screen on 3rd and long, it was awful

Drive 4

Play 1 sweep to JT, Mallory and Brevin are mine up on play side. There is a man on mallorys outside shoulder and inside of Brevin. The next man is on Brevins outside shoulder but 5 yards down field. Mallory and Brevin make no adjustments, Mallory tries to block the man on his outside but can’t reach him, it stretches the play and lets the man Brevin is supposed to block come up and make tackle. This is a simple high school adjustment of a cross block, since they were running outside Brevin should have caved the man down on his inside and Mallory pulled around behind him to lead on the man 5 yards off the ball. If they do that I promise this olay gains at least 5-10 yards instead it’s a tackle for a loss. Again this is high school stuff

Play 2 awful pass blocking, no one touches the nose guard and he runs free to qb, another miscommunication on whose blocking who,

Play 3 we just run Perry because it’s 3rd and a mile
