Good evening, Baseball Caniacs:

As we head down the stretch of the 2021 season with some downtime in between games and Boston College this weekend, I thought this would be a good opportunity to take a look at where our team is. As a subscriber to D1baseball.com, I've included some of their info to help better explain what's going on.

For starters, considering how we've played up and down this season, things are not as bleak for the U and the Coastal Division. With four three-game
series and one mid-week game to play, we are only two games out of first place. IF we make a run we have a chance to host a regional.

Not bad for a team that is unranked.

Check out the divisions below and see where the Canes are and how we've fared to date.

One of this week's questions was about Miami:

Adam: I know Miami lost 2 of 3 up at Chapel Hill, but is there hope for this team to turn a corner and do some damage come post season? Or is this going be another season of 2 and out or being at home come tourney time

Aaron Fitt: It’s just been a wild up-and-down season for this young Miami squad — and the same goes for most of the teams in the ACC, really. Those teams are all just beating up on each other over this 36-game conference slate. Miami has its flaws, and it doesn’t feel like an Omaha team to me, but heck they do have some exciting young talent and some accomplished veterans who have been around the block. They could absolutely get hot at the right time and make a run. Not much of an answer, but I just don’t have a ton of conviction in most of those ACC teams — but many of them have shown enough flashes to make you think they’re capable of doing something. It’s just a matter of who will play well at the right time.

I definitely feel like any team that finishes .500 in the ACC this year should be a lock, but getting within two games of .500 may very well be enough too.l remind you again that the ACC teams have been forced to play a 36-game conference schedule and only 50 games overall, which means RPI is not a useful tool to evaluate those teams — you need more inter-conference cross-pollination for the RPI to mean anything.

NCAA POSTSEASON
The ACC is scheduled to announce the 16 regional host sites on May 10, 2 weeks before our season ends. (Why?) It won't impact the Top 8 or top 12 teams, but what if we don't host yet win at least 2-3 vs GT and Louisville and move into the top 16?

Two of the top college baseball sites, D1Baseball.com and Baseball America, both have Miami playing...ready for this...in Starkville, MS, where we were two years ago. Host Mississippi St. is the projected No. 4 national seed with Miami either a No. 2 or No. 3 seed. But remember, these guessing games change week to week based on wins/losses.

Update: On Wednesday D1Baseball.com has FSU replacing us in Starkville and Miami headed for Ruston, LA, home of Louisiana Tech. We'd be the No. 2 seed with host Tech No. 1 (No. 12 nationally), 2. Miami, 3. Baylor and 4. SE Louisiana.

Secure Teams: Arkansas, Vandy, TCU
On the Bubble (IN): Mississippi St., Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas
On the Bubble (OUT): Arizona, East Carolina

REGIONAL HOSTS PROJECTIONS - Top 16 (Courtesy: D1Baseball.com)
Secure Teams: The eight national seeds above
On the Bubble (IN): Stanford, Louisville, UNC-Charlotte*, South Carolina, Pittsburgh, Nebraska

On the Bubble (OUT): Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Louisiana Tech, Oregon St., Southern Miss, Gonzaga, UC Irvine

That's it for now. I will try to provide U an update like this each week leading up to the next series. After BC we have App St./Home, GT/home and at Louisville before the ACC tournament in Charlotte.

I hope to see many of you back here this Friday night at 7 for Game 1 at BC.

Go Canes!
