Watched the Cincy disaster again....and it's truly incredible. It's seriously Groundhog Day. It's the same game we've seen countless times under this staff. The literal same script. What is Miami known for under Golden? In no particular order: Penalties, especially offensive putting the O behind the sticks, special teams blunders, horrible 3rd down performance, no creativity or effectiveness in the redzone, poor game planning in the first half on defense, crazy substitutions that make no sense, short yardage struggles, and not living up to our offensive potential against bad opponents. Well, it was all on display again Thursday night. Every single thing. I guess those of us who thought maybe it would be different are the dumbasses. Nothing changed RE: scheme or staff...why would we think the performance would be any different?
Now, I truly don't believe Miami is quite as bad as they showed on Thursday. They're bad, but they're not that bad. Again, a lot of people believe the game of football is Xbox. Miami's rated an 89, and Cincy is rated an 83...so we just simulate the game and Miami will win. Nothing could be further from the truth. The game is the most emotional and passionate game that exists in the world. So when Cincy comes out in a blackout on a national stage in front of a record crowd on a Thursday night, they play their A game. And they certainly did Thursday night. I expected them to play much better than they did against Memphis. Again, no team is as good or as bad as they look in 1 week. Every game stands by itself. So I wasn't especially shocked to see Cincy play well. But I was shocked to see Miami play so poorly on offense. To me, this game was on the offense more than anything else. 23 points...3 in the second half, is absolute inexcusable. This isn't Bethune, but it isn't the 85 Bears either. I was incredibly disappointed in the offensive performance. As bad as the D was in the first half, they gave us a chance to win in the 3rd quarter. And Miami's offense wasn't up to the challenge. The questionable O-Line play we talked about coming into the season finally reared it's ugly head. The short yardage blocking was laughable. The pass protection was poor. I'll say this....Miami's OL is going to make FSU's DTs some serious money this weekend. Lots of highlight tape material will be made for FSU's line against this group. Gary hit on most of what I saw in his film reviebw, so I won't write 10 pages on what I saw. It was pretty evident. But I just couldn't believe how many times I said while watching the Cincy game, "I've seen this game before". It's the same one we play everytime we line up against a team with a pulse. All those characteristics I listed in the beginning of the post. They ALL happened. And they ALWAYS happen. Not that this is any kid of insight here, but it's clear as day (and has been for a while) that Golden has to go. That loss was probably the nail in the coffin. We'll see how this weekend goes...but damn I was so incredibly disappointed Thurs night that it's taken me this long to be able to put it into words.
Speaking of FSU...man....I know many of you have given up on the year and team/staff, and I really can't blame you. How can we expect to beat anyone good if we haven't ever done it? But wow....if you can't beat FSU this year, then when? Again, like I always say, a team isn't as bad or as good as they look in 1 game. FSU is NOT as bad as they looked against Wake. But they're not a very good football team, and it starts with Golson. He is totally, completely lost out there right now. People tend to forget this is a complicated offense Jimbo runs...well Golson got the playbook in July. He has no idea what he's doing. None. Also, all summer all anyone said was turnovers turnovers turnovers. You think Golson didn't hear every word of that? He hasn't turned it over in 4 games...but it's because it's all he's thinking about. You can't play QB like that. It's part of what made Jamies so great in that offense...he wasn't afraid of making mistakes. Golson is. It's clear as day, he has no grasp of the offense and he's playing super conservatively. He will only improve as the year goes on, Miami gets a gift getting them this early in the year. I do not expect Cook to play. That's obviously gigantic, he's a Top 5 back nationally. Mario Pender was the backup and very good, and he's out most likely for the year with a collapsed lung. They'll be totally, completely inexperienced in the backfield. Also Terrance Smith is dinged up (again) and not practicing. Huge again. He was playing like the best backer in the ACC. Him hobbled is huge. Nate Andrews hurt his knee and will not play. Starting safety. They already moved Ramsey to corner, and losing Andrews is huge. You'll see a ton of Derwin James Saturday night, he's unreal talented but a true freshman. A good offense will exploit him. Make no mistake, he'll be a high draft pick in a few years. But he's 18 and very much still learning. The FSU OL has been very shaky. Hofield started at Center against WF. He's is REALLY BAD. So like I said....if Miami can't beat FSU now, then when? They are very, very gettable. Take Yearby and Walton from us, Carter, Linder, Grace...and see what we got left. We'd lose to FAU. This is what's facing FSU this week, these are the guys they have out. Losing to these guys again, for the 6th straight time, without their top 2 backs, Safety, best backer, no Matthew Thomas...Featherston has been hurt all year. It would be incredibly embarrassing. Now is the time. I can't fault those of you who have no faith. I get it. It's very hard to expect Golden to beat these guys. But seriously, if it's not now, then when? I see a very average Miami team and a decent FSU team with a ton of injuries. Please for the love of god Golden, before you leave to Piscataway, please please please do ONE good thing for this program before you go. Allow us to walk out of Doak Saturday night screaming, "ITS GREAT....TO BE....A MI-AM-EE HURRRRRRRRRR-A-CANE!!" Then enjoy Rutgers. But just do this fan base one solid, please, before you get your sorry ass out of town.
Go Canes!
