I'm hoping that Deon has a healthy and productive year this season playing at safety and occasional cornerback. In think his dual role in run support and pass coverage will give him a big boost in next year's draft. Why?
Bigger, hard hitting safeties are losing value in the NFL. Landon Collins of Alabama slipped out of the first round and Gerod Holliman of Louisville has yet to be drafted. Both are over 220lbs. The preference these days in the pass happy NFL is for a versatile safety who can support the run while also staying on the field in nickel and dime packages. Earl Thomas of the Seahawks is the model safety in this model.
Deon is big enough and more than willing enough to support the run. But, he's also fast enough to cover WRs and TEs. Improving his coverage and ball skills this year will serve him well in the draft.
Hope it happens for him!
