Firstly, although the majority of us are pissed off as to what we see, this is an easier fix than we have had in past. It's not like we have been blown out in any game, and honestly, under CMR, Shannon and Al we never make that comeback on Saturday. We would have a Clemson, Virginia, Wisc 56-0 type games. Manny is an inexperienced head coach, but anyone who knows him will tell you he is very very smart. Recognizing and then correcting mistakes, whether it be schematic, players or coaches is essential. His comments today illustrate he sees the issues and would not just "stay the course."
My humble changes would come on offense-GO TO SPREAD. Please! We have been running a pro-style attack in some form since 1983, and Vinny T is the last QB that played here and on Sundays. The rest were JAGS (even Gino and Dorsey). We don't have access to the type of o lineman that Wisc, Ohio State, Bama, Stanford can recruit. South Florida High school football is filled with fast athletic guys who all run spread in some form at the schools. Imagine the Oklahoma offense with local athletes-would be unstoppable. Look at highest scoring teams in country, and they all (except Bama) run a spread. The time has come. UCF can score on anyone (including ACC and SEC teams) running that offense, imagine us running it with right offensive coaching staff. Scott Frost scores like 45 points a game when coaching at UCF with spread, and can't score now at Nebraska with same offense. Reason: Nebraska o linemen can't run it. You have to run schemes that you can recruit to in your region of country.
Defense: we need to be frankly smarter and not just run downhill and continually over pursue. Jimmy's defense of having fast linebackers and 2 deep safeties is far more preferable then this current scheme. Imagine CMR wanted to make Banda and Patke co defensive coordinators. Nice guys, who honestly are glorified grad students/recruiters. We need some veteran greybeards on this side of ball. Even Manny's D, never really stopped a great offense during his years as a DC, as our scheme is to easy beat when a good coach has time to prepare and incorporate mis-direction, screens etc.
I am encouraged Manny took some action today. CMR would have his son call plays even if we had to punt on 2nd down.
