Final Update:

After 1 inning we were down 3-0...we get to within one at 3-2 before FSU scored 2x to go up 5-2...then they added a solo HR in the top of the 9th to lead 6-2...

In the bottom of the 9th...we loaded the bases twice and the best we could do was score only 1 run...

We brought the winning run to the plate and took a called strike 3...the 13th time we struck out in this game...see the stat below...

We made it interesting at the end, Caniacs but it was too little, too late...

For the 4th straight time this year, we lose to FSU...they have us in baseball as we have them in football...

For the first time since our first trip to this tournament in 2005...we go 0-2...

And for the 2nd time in as many games...we can't produce the timely hit we needed with runners on base and in scoring position...we gave ourselves a chance...but couldn't follow through...how frustrating...the only positive is we didn't get our butts beat like the first 3 games...

LP: Jake Garland(6-3, 5.40 ERA)
*Combined with 11 LOB vs Duke, we left 19 runners on base in 2 games and scored 5 runs
**Combined with the 11 Ks vs Duke, we struck out 24 times in 2 games
IDK what the stat was for our ABs with runners in scoring position but it was glaring

We drop to 32-18 and now we wait to find out which regional we go to...it points to Gainesville...joy...to play the Gates at their place in the post-season...again...and don't U know they will want payback after we won 2 of 3 against them way back at the start of the season...

The NCAA Baseball Championship Selection Special will be Monday at 12 pm on ESPN2.

No need to update U with stats...I'm not in the mood to do it and I doubt U are in the mood to read them...

Thanks for being a part of this thread...we have a minimum of 2 more games to play...we'll find out where to next on Monday.

Have a great and safe holiday weekend, Caniacs, and to all those who served...thank U for our service!

...it's still great to be...

Go Canes!

-----------------------------------

Hello, Baseball Caniacs...

Heads up....I work until 4 pm today and it may be 4:30 before I get home (midway through the game) so if someone can provide scoring updates until I hop in I would appreciate it.

In oday Virginia blasted top-seed Notre Dame 14-1 to knock them out and earn the Cavs a seat at the semis table tomorrow at 1 pm (I think). Had we won we would face UVA and not ND.

On to our reality...

I don't know about U, but I'm still smh at what happened yesterday. With so much to play for and with so much on the line, how could we let North Carolina run...oops, wrong sport. U get the idea. Many of your post-game comments here on CS criticizing our team's efforts, or lack of, were spot on. But we've seen this before, right?

Here's what Coach G had to say after the game. He was spot on too:

“Tough one there. I thought the game was pretty well in all phases except for the fact that we didn’t do a good job offensively there with leaving way too many guys on base. We had some opportunities: man on second, nobody out, guys in scoring position, one out, two outs, but we just left 11 guys on base. I told our guys multiple times, ‘It’s going to bite us if we don’t watch out.’ We left the guys on base, we didn’t capitalize, we didn’t get insurance runs. Can’t expect our bullpen to be perfect every game and that was the case today.” (Courtesy: UM)

So, now what? My question is where's our team's head after losing (and playing) the way they did vs Duke and now having to pivot to play a team that swept them just a couple of months ago? Well, we swept Duke, and look what happened. Can we respond in kind? I bet if I posted a poll on our chances of winning, the numbers would not look good.

STARTING PITCHERS
I don't know who gets the nod for us. We are scheduled to face FSU's ace pitcher Parker Messick who was just named the ACC's Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He's 6-2 on the year with a 3.30 ERA. He pitched against us in Game 1 of our series at The Light in mid-March. He went 6.2 innings, gave up 1 run (1 E), walked 1, and struck out 10 as they routed us 13-1.

Maybe that's why their HC Mike Martin Jr. penciled him in for this game but as their Friday night starter did they assume (wrongly) they would still beat Duke with their No. 2? It turns out they couldn't as they were routed 12-1. If a first game W puts U in the semis and in turn, makes Game 2 meaningless, how do U not throw your best pitcher in Game 1? Just asking

Handing the Noles their second loss in the tournament so we exit at least 1-1 would provide some solace, I suppose. But if nothing else, this game must be about pride. What do we have left in the tank? Are we going to battle on or roll over?

May we have something to cheer about, Caniacs. I hope to be with U halfway in.

Go Canes!
