We don't know how much CMR is walking away with. It's not $20M but it's not 0 either. My sweet spot is $8M.
ALL the candidates on Gary's short list has a buyout and/or has downside just like Manny. Guys like the coaches from memphis, iowa st and syracuse are always risky with their limited success at smaller programs. I love Babers but he just got a long extension. Venables has no HC experience.
Mario was contacted, no doubt. He has a big buyout. We don't know how accurate reports are that he would have taken the job. He is also in line for an extension with another good season.
We don't know how interested these guys were with the QB Room almost empty. Rough start ahead, for sure.
The only guys that are affordable, available and interested are Butch and Schiano. Scratch Schiano. Butch is my guy but the PC world will not allow it - just a fact. Same with Leach, who also has a buyout, lol. I would have been fine with Mario, Babers, BBB or Diaz.
Blake had to move fast. Transfers and decommits were coming with a long search. The last long search, headhunter company and all, got us Golden.
Manny is the young, aggressive coach many of us want and the Canes Lifer UM needs, imo. He will hire an OC in his image - young, aggressive, cutting edge. He needs to make the hire quick for all the obvious reasons which together make speedy decisions necessary. The '19 class, head off transfers & decommits, get a jump on grad transfer QBs, fill out the staff.
This is exactly what everyone wanted - big changes for the offense. Were going to get that and we keep Manny. It's a no-brainer to me. Manny is smart, this is going to work.
