been playing out of position the last two years
McDermott - At 6'7 308lbs KC seems to lose a lot of leverage when he bends down to block stout and squatty defense tackles. He also doesn't have the upper body strength to compensate this lack of leverage when playing LG. However, at LT he has the height/frame for a quicker kickback than Darling when playing against speedier DEs and the arm length to hit DEs at the point of attack before DEs can attack him. The longer frame doesn't work well when fighting inside a telephone booth against shorter DTs that can leverage their strength by getting under his pad level. KC has only played one game at LT and against subpar competition. It'll be interesting to see if he sticks at the position and further develops there.
Darling - I think its been fairly obvious his kickback is too slow to play LT especially against DEs that have above average speed. To compensate he has drawn a lot of offsides penalties to literally get a jump on the competition. At 6'4 320 Darling would seem a better fit to move inside the telephone booth at LG. His height and his frame is better suited handle DTs that are stronger and slower the DEs with at the right pad level. If you watch the 2014 bowl game against South Carolina he actually didn't do to bad at right tackle as a freshman against the stronger slower strongside DEs. I think he'd be suited to play guard however we just haven't had the depth at tackle to allow him to play at his natural position. Hopefully KC picks it up to allow this to happen which would help shore up the teams weakest group.
