" The White Whale"
For all the naysayers that say this can NOT happen I simply say look no further then Mike Riley leaving Oregon st for Nebraska or Chris Peterson leaving Boise St for Washington.
Simple fact this CAN happen but it will take the Admin and leadership being serious about football and getting miami back to the top. They are going to have to show the same dedication to winning as other programs and pursue Gary with the same fervor as Ala did saban and Mich did with harbaugh. To get this done is simply going to require 1 thing... A 4-5 yr contract at $5million/ yr PERIOD/END OF STORY/GOOD DAY!
He currently make $3.5mil/yr
Pros :
Simple fact he is a winner! Has Won in all 3 conferences TCU has been in and has 6 conference championships combined( 1 C-USA,4 MWC, 1 Big-12). 75% career win rate as HC( 132-45). 8-5 bowl record , 2-1 in BCS games
Great eye for talent and developer. Takes raw athletes and turns them into all-conference players and NFL players.
Great name value.
Offensive and defensive schemes would be highly successful at Miami. Runs an uptempo spread offense and a very highly successful 4-2-5 defense that is always ranked high.
Cons:
Vast majority of success has only been at one school
Despite success does not pull in top classes. TAMU & Baylore have been able to pull in more highly rated recruits than TCU
Bottom line:
Gary Patterson wins. The recipe for success at Miami is to keep a good majority of the top south fla talent home but also have the ability to scout and develop those raw athletes that are plentiful as well. Like turning warren sapp from a TE into an all time DT, taking big Safeties and making them all american linebackers, track stars into all american wrs etc. Gary Patterson turned a wr/RB/safety tweener into a hall of fame linebacker named Brian urlacher at New Mexico. He turned QB jerry Hughes into a All American DE and recently highly paid NFL player. A 6-0 190 wr is naw going to be a first rnd draft pick at linebacker in Paul dawson( 6-2 230). There are several other examples as well. As I mentioned before his offensive & defensive schemes would pay huge dividends at Miami, not just in wins but attendance & revenue as well. Fans will want to come watch the high octane offense and dominant defense.
One of his cons he is already looking to correct this offseason. He realizes that while he has been succesful he still does not have nor has he played for a national championship. The teams who have won are teams that have almost consistently landed top 5-10 classes. After spring practices he and his coaches are headed over to Tuscaloosa to learn recruiting techniques from the best in the business.
Gary Patterson and his staff are heading to Alabama when spring practice concludes to see how Alabama has been so successful in recent years on the recruiting trail.
"We want to see some things recruiting-wise, how they do things," Patterson said via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "You don't just learn Xs and Os from people. You're trying to learn things on a lot of different levels."
