Over the last couple of years I've heard countless times how Coach D is useless and that he could quite possibly be the worst defensive coordinator Miami has ever had. Coach Coley on the other hand receives praise for the most part, although he also has received his share of criticism, and is generally well liked among the fan base. The 2013 season was one of the worst ever for the hurricane defense finishing the year ranked 96th in total defense. A really poor defensive line that couldn't stop the run, 82nd in rushing defense, was the main culprit for this. Fast forward one year to 2014 and the defense finished the season ranked 13th in total defense. Now I know rankings can be skewed and I also know that certain teams ran at will against us, we finished the season 36th against the run, but there is no denying there was a significant improvement on the defensive side of the ball. This was all done with only one real difference maker on the defensive side of the ball (DP).
The offense finished the 2013 season, its first season under Coach Coley, ranked 46th in total offence. The knock on this offense was they could not control the clock and would only score on explosive plays therefore putting our embarrassing defense right back out onto the field. 2014 was supposed to be this units breakout year as we finally had a lot of returning starters, especially on the O line. The team finished the 2014 season ranked a disappointing 42nd in total offense. This offense had 3 linemen drafted into the NFL(flowers as a top 10 pick), a top 3 RB in the country in Duke, a top 2 TE in the country in Walford, and a first round WR in Dorsett. Yes I know Kaya was only a freshman but we definitely can't blame him as he was lights out. So why was our offense so average last year ?
Judging by last years stats one would assume that Coach Coleys would be the one getting a lot more heat yet it is Coach D. I've heard people say that Golden restricts Coach Coleys play calling and keeps it conservative but none of us really know if this is true and who's to say he doesn't do that with Coach D too if it is. Is it because Coach Coley recruited Brad Kaya ? I agree that this was HUGE but that doesn't mean you should disregard how the offense has actually been performing on the field. In my opinion this year will be a true test for Coach Coley as I believe he does not have the same caliber of talent he had last year but hopefully this will be countered by Brads progression as a player and leader.
In conclusion Id like to say I actually like James Coley but I'm still not sold on him as an Offensive Coordinator. Hopefully this year will be the year he makes me a true believer
