Auburn loved him as their DC. He is better than Derek mason. He had a huge amount of support at auburn to be the head coach when they fired Gus. It didn't win out tho and they took a chance on harsin. They are regretting it now. Steele was holding that team together once the momentum grew for mahlzahn to finally go, which had been going on for years.
Defense was never a problem there at auburn during his tenure. Lots of opposition was on Gus and his play calling, etc. Gus didn't like to recruit.
Steele is better than any of the other guys that have been mentioned so far. He recruits well. Tons of experience. Total home run.
And btw, when they fired Gus they really wanted Mario and went hard after him. They were hoping Mario would come with Steele remaining as dc
