Kotie Kimble just finished his fifth season on the Charlotte staff.

Kimble played a major role in helping the 49ers sign the top-ranked recruiting class in Conference USA in each of the last four years.

In the summer of 2020, Kimble was named one of the Top Assistant Coaches in Conference USA by Stadium and Jeff Goodman (https://watchstadium.com/top-mens-basketball-assistants-c-usa-07-16-2020/). Goodman polled at least 20 coaches (primarily assistant coaches) in Conference USA to compile the list.

COACHING CAREER AT CHARLOTTE
In his first season at Charlotte (2018-19), the 49ers limited their opponents to an average of 68.7 points per game which is over an 11-points improvement from the previous season. Jon Davis earned second-team NABC All-District and All-Conference USA honors while scoring his 2,000th career point.

In his second season at Charlotte (2019-20), the 49ers won 16 games, which was the most wins by the 49ers since 2014, while recording 10 Conference USA wins, which was the most league wins by the Niners since 2006. The 49ers won a school-record 13 games in Halton Arena. The Niners finished fourth in Conference USA after being picked twelfth in the preseason coaches’ poll. Four Charlotte players earned Conference USA honors including Jahmir Young capturing the league’s Freshman of the Year award. The Niners finished Top 50 in the nation in scoring defense after limiting their opponents to a school-record 64.7 points per game.

In year three, the Niners pushed through a COVID-19 affected season that saw a number of contests postponed throughout the year. Despite a tough end to the season, a young roster mixed with a third year of great recruiting of both freshman and transfers leaves the 49ers with plenty of fire power entering the 2021-22 season.

Year four saw the 49ers make an eight win improvement from 2020-21, winning 17 games, marking the most for the 49ers since 2013-14. In Conference USA play, Charlotte earned 10 victories--marking the second time since 2006 the program earned double-figure league victories--for the second time under Sanchez. The Niners also greatly improved their performances away from home, earning six total road wins and four wins away from home in conference action. CLT's six road wins were the most since 2011-12 and Charlotte's four in conference play were the most since 2009-10 when CLT was still in the Atlantic 10.

Kimble was also integral in the development of junior guard Jahmir Young who earned First Team All-Conference USA honors for a second consecutive season, after ranking second in the league in scoring with 19.9 points per game and leading CLT in scoring, rebounding and assists in 2021-22.

PREVIOUS COACHING EXPERIENCE
Before joining the 49ers coaching staff, he spent seven years as an assistant coach at William & Mary (2011-18). The Tribe posted three of the program’s eight 20-win seasons while capturing the Colonial Athletic Association’s regular-season title in 2015 and reaching the CAA Tournament Championship game in 2014 and 2015 while he was on the coaching staff. During that stretch, William & Mary averaged 16 wins per season.

Kimble helped the Tribe to three-straight 20-win seasons in 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16, a first at W&M since 1949-51. The Tribe offense ranked among the best in the nation during his tenure. Over his last six years, W&M is one of only two schools (along with Gonzaga) to rank among the top 30 nationally in field goal percentage.

In 2017-18, the Tribe became the first program in NCAA history to shoot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent at the free throw line. The Tribe led the country in free throw (81.1) and 3-point (43.4) percentage.

Over his last five years at William & Mary, the Tribe established school records for points, points per game, three-point percentage, three-pointers made, free throw percentage, assists, assists per game, assist-to-turnover ratio and fewest turnovers. According to KenPom.com, W&M possessed one of most effective and efficient offenses in the country. The Tribe ranked among the top 65 in offensive efficiency the last five years, including 27th in 2014-15 and 2017-18. The Green and Gold ranked among the top 25 each of the last six years in effective field goal percentage, including a trio of top-10 efforts. The Tribe was second nationally in 2017-18 at 59.5 percent. W&M averaged a school-record 85 points per game in 2017-18, the third-best average in CAA history.

Kimble oversaw the team’s academics, recruiting and scouting while working with the team’s guards. During that stretch, William & Mary had 17 players named to the CAA All-Academic team. In 2013 and 2014, he was named as one of the top assistants in the CAA by NextUpRecruits.com. He recruited and helped develop three players that scored over 1,000 career points including, Marcus Thornton, the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Before joining the coaching staff at William & Mary, Kimble spent three seasons as an assistant coach at UNC Asheville on Eddie Biedenbach’s coaching staff. In 2011, UNC Asheville won the Big South Tournament and earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, UNC Asheville defeated Arkansas Little Rock in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. He helped coach and recruit four players that earned All-Big South honors. In each of his three seasons at UNC Asheville, the Bulldogs finished in the top four of the Big South standings and advanced to at least the Big South Conference Tournament semifinals.

EDUCATION
Kimble earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Coastal Carolina in 2007. At Coastal Carolina, he worked as a student assistant under basketball coaches Pete Strickland and Buzz Peterson. During his time in Conway, S.C., the Chanticleers amassed 59 victories, including a 20-win season and an appearance in the Big South Championship Game in 2006.
