I think people think Miami is a top 10 job or top 15. ITS NOT!
Miami has 1 thing right now working for it and that is location. Location to high school talent. After that it’s mostly meh ( well besides education too).
Miami has decent to above average facilities but still not to where the big schools have them. Miami has no on campus stadium. Just started to pay coaches but really our pay matches that of a Iowa st so we really are not doing nothing there either.
Last but not least we have a mess of an athletic department. We have an idiot AD, no body to check the AD or no checks and balances for him and a apathetic president.
what other big time program has this? To be a big time program you need HC, AD and President lining up on same page. Can’t have no checks and balances for the AD and a president that rather watch FIFA on Saturday’s when u expect to be a big time program in today’s college landscape.
We can overestimate the Miami job all we want and think that yah we could get Urban or we could get Riley or Franklin but let’s stop kidding ourselves. Our talent pool for HCs is very limited.
That’s why Gary and myself were so adamant about Mario. What other coach would leave what they have to come into this mess?
Matt Campbell is/was my #1. Matt is getting paid $4 million a year. Has AD and president behind him. Can recruit who he wants without rabid fan base hounding him about why he didn’t land this 5 star or 4 star. He can pick and choose his job. He just turned down FSU. The Iowa st HC chose to remain at Iowa st over FSU
let’s look at some history for min. When these jobs were open many in the media were asking if these jobs were desirable jobs or big jobs anymore. I’m am talking about USC, Texas, Michigan, FLA and Ala.
When USC fired Paul Hackett their 1st choice was Dennis Erickson who chose to stay at Oregon st over SC. Yes Oregon st over SC. They looked at other coaches who turned them down and went with 5th or 6th choice pete Carroll. They are keeping Clay Helton right now because both Urban and James said no and there is nobody else.
Texas fired Mack Brown who they got from UNC and replaced him with Louisville Charlie strong then fired strong for Houston Tom Herman. Michigan after getting rid of Lloyd Carr hires Rich Rod from WV which was a bad fit then fired him to hire Brady Hoke, who they considered a “mich man” from San Diego st. They then fired him and hired Harbaugh who was on his way out from San Fran.
After Urban retired from FLA , fla hired Texas coach in waiting wil Muschamp who was trash. They then spent $7 million in a buyout to Colorado st to hire Shark humper Jim McElwain who was another disaster and after firing him have hired Dan Mullen who has been trying to get OUT of Starkville Miss since he got there as evidence by him interviewing at Miami TWICE.
Lastly Alabama. before Saban got there many wondered if Ala was still a desirable job. They hired one disaster after another kind of like us. They hired mike debose who had limited success if u want to call it that, then Dennis Franchione from TCU, Mike Price from Washington st who got fired because he like strip clubs more than coaching and mike Shula. After that they went all in on Nick Saban...this was a President , AD and boosters all getting on the same page to get this done.
now back to Miami. We don’t have big money boosters. We have a joke for an athletics department right now and like I said i President rather watch a FIFA tournament than see Miami in the playoffs.
there are not too many coaches that are walking into this.
Mario was prob one and was prob the best choice because like my previous thread he would know what was needed and didn’t really need to lean on the AD or president , just tell them what he needed and let’s get it done.
Maybe Chuck Pagano was another. Maybe he could have brought chud back to run the O and Clint hurt as co dc/DL and RC.
either way the list is short because if we are realistic about Miami it’s not that great of job
