Where would the world be now had we not gone to war with Iraq?

Isis would never have existed. Sunnis would still be running that country rather than populating Isis, Al Queda, etc. Shias would still be the abused minority there and elsewhere. Iran and Iraq would remain traditional enemies.

Invasion of Iraq was the worst foreign policy move of the US other than the Vietnam War. Thank you Bush II, Cheney and Rumsfeld.

It ended up being a horror show. But I think 6882 was asking for opinions of what modern day Iraq might be like if we had not invaded. Would a legacy of Saddam's bathist regime still be in power? Would the Shite south have become part of Iran? Would ISIS had taken the Iraqi infrastucture and have a real country power base? Great question 6882. Taking Saddam out was the right thing to do. My opinion was always to allow Iraq to splinter into the three natural populations, Sunni, Shite and Kurd. But who knows how things might have turned out if we had not invaded? Might have been far worse.

30000 individuals who were part of the Iraqi military were forced out -they had no employment, no income and were left access to all the same arms and weapons. This created the pre-conditions for the rise of ISIS in post-US Iraq. Saddam would have been ousted by his own people and ISIS would not exist.

There was agreement by all sides to engage in that foolish endeavor. Plenty of blame to go around.

The democrats are the new war mongers, along with the liberal media. It seems that the media is urging the USA to get directly involved in Ukraine. Or at least they are ginning up the scare environment.

Just did a wiki search on votes against the Iraq War Resolution. Combining all Senate and Congressional voters, 4 Republicans voted against the Resolution. 61 Dems voted against it.

I agree that many Republicans have now turned away from the GOP’s traditional stance for an aggressive and muscular foreign policy. Staying away from foreign involvement under an “America First” banner seems like the new Trump chant.

There‘s no chance off American troops being deployed within Ukraine. Ukraine is not part of NATO so NATO members have not pledged to defend them

A bigger question will be about Taiwan if China tries to annex that country. What say you guys: will/should the US intervene militarily to defend Taiwan’s independence?

Taiwan is not a country. Period
Why do you call it a country?
We don’t recognize them as a country. They are not members of the UN. No other country recognizes them as a country.

No we are not going to fight for the sovereignty of a non country.

Next , maybe we won’t deploy troops in Ukraine today . What about if they join NATO and then the Russians decide to annex The Donbass where 70% of the residents are Russians? Granting NATO membership to Ukraine is suicidal.

And the deployment of troops to Romania and Poland is ridiculous, it’s just provocative.
As are the threats we are making. What happens if we starve Russians and try and bankrupt the country? A couple of tactical Nukes would get everyone’s attention.

"And the deployment of troops to Romania and Poland is ridiculous, it's just provocative". What a crock of shit. What's provocative is surrounding Ukraine with more than 100,000 troops along the border and sending six amphibious assault ships into the harbor in Crimea. Romania and Poland are members of NATO which the U.S. as part of the alliance pledges to help if attacked.

d,

Have you turned into a military dove? Is there anywhere that you would fight to protect American interest and Allies?

He condones land grabs by our two biggest adversaries and thinks we should just sit by with our thumb up our butt and do nothing. Calls it "provocative" to send troops to Nato allies but doesn't mention the 100,000 troops surrounding Ukraine. What a dipshit!

Yeah our southern border !!
That’s where we are being invaded!
The Russians pose absolutely no threat to us . Zero
The issues with Ukraine and Russia have been ongoing for 1000 years .
The Capitol of Ukraine , Kiev, was initially settled by the Rus , basically Russians
It’s their problem
Our problem is China who have the economic might to render us a secondary country.

The Russians are not going to invade Romania or Poland, sending troops there is a PR stunt , just like the Covid testing initiative. Useless.
Irrelevant.

The only thing that is provocative is the behavior of Vladmir Putin, who you are apparently ok with defending by taking pro-Russian positions on this matter.

This is the effect of the culture wars idea that has been swirling in Republican politics for the past couple of decades. In the Reagan era, Republicans stood for ideals that made it a no brainer to criticize the Soviets. In the Trump era, they stand for identify politics, where you can apparently only criticize predominately non-white nations like China, but not Vladimir Putin's Russia.

Yes, we will in a very clandestine manner. Not with troops but with hardware. It would be a long costly war with Taiwan with China ultimately taking the island but at a huge cost.
That's why China hasn't acted yet. It would be no cakewalk.

The U.S. knows that Russia is not going to invade Romania or Poland because NATO members have an obligation to defend any member that is attacked. Sending troops there is not a PR stunt. It's a ploy to have troops in the vicinity if needed in Ukraine. The U.S. will not sit back and allow Ukraine to be overrun. That's the real reason the U.S. keeps sending more troops. You seem to think Putin is a badass but he wouldn't stand a chance against our military and he knows it. The U.S. simply has technology supremacy in too many areas.

I’m a history guy, deal with Russia now while we still can. Don’t let them turn into Germany circa 1040’s. This whole it’s not our war excuse is kicking the can down the road. We’re either going to deal with russia now or later. The russia threat is snow balling.

Not so sure, looking back as bad as it was that taking out saddam was the worst thing. Even if he didn’t have wmd’s back then he’d surely have them now and he’d use them. China and russia would be all over them with funding plots on us soil. The guy openly gave sanctuary to terrorists and admittedly funded them. How do you turn a blind eye to that? Did any of you not learn anything during 911? If a terrorist entity tells you they’re going to do something, they’re going to try and do something.

for the people saying that war cost three trillion dollars… you’re on crack. That money went every where but where it was suppose to. There’s less than 8 billion people in the entire world and you think one war against a third world country cost three trillion dollars? Just do the math. It’s non sense to the T and completely irrational. All of Iraq wealth even with their oil isn’t worth one trillion dollars and you’re going to tell me that we spent three trillion dollars on a war against them. That money was real, it just wasn’t on the war.

not saying I want to go to war with Russia but as in life the only way to talk your way out of a fight is to not only let the other guy know that you’re willing to fight but that it’s in the other guys best interest not to get into the fight. Time to get tough. The longer we placate this bully the more casualties there’s going to be as putin grows. They have the oil, nukes and chinas manufacturing as it is. It’s not going to get better or easier if the world just keeps giving russia and china their lunch money. These guys have bad things in mind.

make no mistake about it, the war on iraq put the world on notice that we’ll fight and turn the world upside down if we have to do it.

again, only way out of a fight is to be willing to get into it. Peace through strength.

if you think the world would be in a better place today with us not taking out saddam, you’re living in la la land. Those soldiers did not die in vain.

The only thing Putin respects is force, so let's show him some! He may be saber-rattling but he knows a war with us would end in his demise.

Between Russia and China, JMO, China is the country we need to be more concerned about. They are more ruthless with their own people( concentration camps) have built up militarily where they now have the worlds largest navy. They have infiltrated our politics, businesses, social media as much as the Russians have. They caused millions of deaths worldwide due to Covid. They support North Korea that sends Ballistic missiles in the direction of Japan, our ally. They threaten the sea lanes in the South China Sea. They have aligned themselves with Russia, North Korea , Iran as well as buying ports and influence in Africa. They even own a port in Freeport in the Bahamas where if they want to could dock military ships. They are outwardly aggressive and obvious as to their attentions. I could be wrong but I feel China is more dangerous.
