Prior to the Game

Miami will honor seniors Davon Reed and Kamari Murphy at 3:45 p.m., prior to the 4 p.m. tip.

The Series - Miami vs. Duke

Coach L is 4-3 against Duke during his tenure as head coach at Miami. Prior to his arrival, the Canes were 2-15 against the Blue Devils.

Since Coach L took over at Miami in 2011, the Hurricanes have two wins at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Only UM and UNC (also two wins at Duke) can claim more than one win at Cameron Indoor during that time.

Davon Reed scored 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting in last season’s 80-69 win over Duke. Ja’Quan Newton had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists in last year’s win vs. Duke. That was the first time in his career he had 10+ points and at least five assists and five rebounds.

Miami’s 96 points in its 96-95 win over Duke in 2008 are the most points the Canes have ever scored in an ACC game.

Miami at No. 18 Duke - Jan. 21, 2017

Playing its third consecutive road game, the University of Miami men’s basketball team fell at No. 18 Duke, 70-58 on Jan. 21, 2017. Senior guard Davon Reed’s 19 points paced a trio of players who finished with double-digit points for Miami (12-6, 2-4 ACC) in a game televised on ESPN (College GameDay) from Cameron Indoor Stadium. Miami used a strong defensive performance in the opening period to build an 18-11 advantage through 10 minutes of play. Duke (14-4, 3-3 ACC) finished the first half with a season-low 25 points, as the Hurricanes forced the Blue Devils to miss all eight of their shots from beyond the arc. Following a jumper by junior guard Ja’Quan Newton, Miami took its largest lead of the game, 35-23, and left for the locker room leading, 36-25. Following the break, the Blue Devils jumped out to a 56-40 lead, after a 31-4 run that lasted until the 8:17 mark. Duke took its largest lead of the game, 66-45, following a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Luke Kennard, with 5:14left to play. Freshman forward Jayson Tatum led the way for the Blue Devils with 14 points, followed by senior guard Matt Jones (13), Kennard (11) and freshman guard Frank Jackson (10). Miami outrebounded the Blue Devils, 36-34, but Duke outshot the Hurricanes 46.2 percent (24-of-52) to 40.0 percent (22-of-55).

Coach L Against the ACC

In Larrañaga's six seasons in the ACC, Miami has at least a .500 record against 11 league opponents. UM has a .500 record or better at home against 13 teams, and on the road against nine ACC squads.

Newton Back After Being Out Three Games

Ja'Quan Newton served a three-game suspension for violating team rules. He missed games against Georgia Tech, Clemson and at Virginia.

Freshmen Have Ice in Their Veins

At Virginia, two freshmen - DJ Vasiljevic and Bruce Brown - knocked down clutch 3-pointers to lead Miami to the overtime victory. With 1:04 left in regulation, Vasiljevic tied the game with a three, then with 19 seconds left in overtime, Brown gave Miami the lead with a shot from long range.

Murphy Finishing Senior Season Strong

Redshirt senior Kamari Murphy is averaging 10.8 points and 7.0 rebounds in 33.2 minutes over the last five games, hitting 77.4 percent (24-31) from the field in those games. He has scored in double digits four of the last five outings and grabbed at least eight rebounds three times. He also recorded a double-double at Virginia (10p, 11r), his first since the ACC opener against NC State (11p, 10r). He has shot better than 62 percent in each of those games.

In the previous 10 ACC games, he averaged 5.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in 29.0 minutes. He was 20-47 (42.6%) from the field in those 10 games. He had 11 points once, and shot better than 62 percent only once (4-of-4 at Syracuse).

Lawrence Shows Versatility

Sophomore Anthony Lawrence Jr., has shown his versatility this season, playing positions one through four. Over the last nine games, he has pulled down at least four rebounds in seven outings. In the last eight games, he has tallied at least three assists five times, including five in each of the last two games.

Playing as the Underdog

Miami is 10-22 under Coach Larrañaga when entering a game as the underdog against an AP top-25 ranked team. The Canes are 5-11 when the opponent is in the AP top 10, and 2-4 when the game is at home against an AP top-10 team.

Ranked Opponents Ahead for Miami

All three of Miami's final regular season games will be played against teams currently listed in national polls. The Canes, who are receiving votes in both polls, host No. 10/11 Duke (2/25) and travel to RV/- Virginia Tech (2/27) and No. 19/20 Florida State (3/4).

Of Miami's three remaining games, two are against teams ranked above the Canes in the current ACC standings: Duke (10-5) and Florida State (10-5), and one is against Virginia Tech (8-7), which is ranked lower than Miami.

The ACC Gauntlet

Miami opened the 2016-17 conference slate with four of six games on the road and will end the season with three of four away from home, which includes road games at No. 14/15 Virginia and No. 17/18 Florida State, while playing No. 12/14 Duke at home.

Miami Playing for 20th Win and 10th ACC Victory

Coach Jim Larrañaga has posted four 20-win seasons in his first five years at The U, and 10 career 20-win seasons. Last year was Miami’s seventh 20-win season since joining the ACC for the 2004-05 campaign. Larrañaga is just the second coach in Miami history with four 20-win seasons, joining Bruce Hale (1954-67).

Also in five seasons under Coach Jim Larrañaga, the Canes have won seven or more ACC games each season and have had 10 or more league victories in three years. Prior to the arrival of Coach L, Miami had never won 10 ACC games in a season.

Reed Selected for Postgraduate Scholarship

Davon Reed is one of nine ACC student-athletes who will receive the Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Award. The postgraduate scholarship is awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements.

Canes Facing Hungry Teams

Against Duke, Miami will play its 11th ACC game against a team coming off of a loss. Miami (6-4) won at Syracuse, at Pitt, vs. Boston College, at NC State, vs. Virginia Tech and at Virginia, but lost at Wake Forest, at Duke, vs. Florida State and at Louisville after the opponent had lost its previous game.
