First and foremost, that was a brutal game. lol... A school like NC Central should never be able to "hang around" against a quality team and program like Miami and Coach L for as long as they did. Then again, is it REALLY any surprise that that happened last night given our brutal losses to teams like Wisconsin-Green Bay. lol.
Last night after the game, someone on the Board used the term "leadership" and how there appears to be a lack of "leadership". I agree 100%, but not the type of leadership from coaching, because I think that Coach L DEFINITELY has the leadership capabilities to coach and manage games- after all we were up by DOUBLE DIGITS last night. So, the leadership from COACHING is just fine and well from Coach L. I am really referring to ON THE COURT LEADERSHIP, as in the type of VETERAN PLAYER LEADERSHIP. I think that THIS is the one thing that is missing on this team above anything else, and there are certainly gaps and holes and flaws which Coach L will need to address and fix during the off-season- and I have no doubt that he will.
When the team reached the Sweet 16 a few years ago, we had BONA FIDE leadership from the PLAYERS in the form of Larkin, Kadji, and others... Where is that NOW...??? It isn't, really... I like and support Angel Rodriguez more than a lot of fans, but Angel is not really a "court general" the way an elite, veteran point guard is... Some player on this team will need to STEP UP and really take a leadership role on this basketball team next year, because AS GOOD OF A COACH AS COACH L IS, ALL coaches HAVE to have ONE OR TWO PLAYERS who are bona fide leaders on the basketball team. As far as the rest of the NIT Tournament- the team deserves a MUCH BETTER showing from fans and students than what we saw last night. Wow was that bad...
And...
If you stop and think about it, the FOOTBALL TEAM has the SAME PROBLEM... When we had our run from 1999-2003 in football, we had a LOT of leaders in the form of PLAYERS: Taylor, Vilma, Ken, Shockey, Vince, Bryant, and on and on and on... Where is that now...??? Duke is gone... Which PLAYER is a leader on offense...??? Which PLAYER is a leader on defense...???
PLAYER LEADERSHIP.
This is a MAJOR REASON why the SPRING GAME is VERY IMPORTANT- to see WHO wants to STEP UP and be a role model for the rest of the players on the team... Football AND Basketball share a DEFICIENCY which is a BASIC COMPONENT for success- PLAYER LEADERSHIP.
Just my honest opinion...
Thoughts...???
