On Wednesday's "Full Ride" show on SixiusXM radio, hosts Chris Childers and former UCLA, Colorado and Washington HC coach Rick Neuheisel spoke with Mike Huguenin, formerly of The Athletic, he is now with On3.com, a new national sports site created by Shannon Terry who also started Rivals (sold to Yahoo in '07) and 247Sports (sold toCBS in 2015).
During the interview, their conversation turned to Miami. Here is the transcript.
Neuheisel: We saw (ex-USC coach) Clay Helton get his pink slip. Is there...who's the next one on the block in your estimation?
Huguenin: Well, you guys know I live in Florida and my goodness, Manny Diaz and Mike Norvell are roasted on a minute-by-minute basis. Norvell is only in his second year.
Florida State has tremendous financial problems. And Miami isn't exactly swimming in money either. Last week, (Michigan St. QB) Payton Thorne looked like he could win
the Heisman.
Miami's secondary is horrendous and I'll be honest, if there is one part of a team that should be really good on every single team in this state it is the secondary because there's tremendous DB's all over this state and last week you had Michigan State torching that secondary.
Miami has given up the most TD passes of any Power 5 school in the country. They've given up 9. Again, Manny Diaz is in his third year and they have regressed, I think, ever since he got there. D'Eriq King's shoulder now is an issue and people are...you saw them on the sideline last week showing off the touchdown ring. Dude, you guys are losing! Worry about the game on the field, not the hardware on the sideline.
Miami's a school...I'm not sure they can afford to get rid of Diaz AND make a big plash with who they hire. Now Mario Cristóbal is a UM alum, grew up in Miami, played there, was a starting offensive lineman. I'll be honest, I think that ship has passed. I don't think they can afford Mario Cristóbal anymore.
They have a tremendous music school, big-time medical school. All the big money donations at UM go to the music school and the medical school. I don't think they have the money to hire a truly, eye-opening coach which might save Manny Diaz, but Miami is not playing good football.
That’s his take.
Go Canes!
