Keeping Manny going forward is a huge mistake, and it is reactionary thinking to state “now is not the time.”
You fire him now to show recruits and coaching candidates that you are serious, and then subsequent wins and losses with an interim head coach become meaningless. Wins and losses with Manny now have a narrative and come with uncertainty. People write shit like “losses are close” and “we just need a few more pieces.”
After firing Manny, and if the team miraculously wins out, you can’t say, “Manny turned the ship around, he deserves X more years.” A new coach is in fact on his way. If we continue to lose, at least it can be excused as a team without a head coach.
There is also an impact on current players, the really good ones, who are/were sitting behind lesser upper classmen who were not being evaluated properly by incompetent coaches, and maybe they can shine and not transfer out frustration.
At 2-4, keeping a lame duck coach hurts more than it helps!
