My son is an undersized lb in his Jr year down here in Miami and had his third concussion this past weekend.
He has played since he was 7 and has always been in love with the game. He knows he doesn't have a future beyond HS ( not interested in D2)but as you guys with sons know, NOTHING means more to him now. His last concussion occurred in his spring game and then he got another in the first half od his first game last weekend.
I took him to see Dr. Hotz - she is affiliated with UM Jackson and her rep is excellent. She deemed his last concussion to be a mild one even though he threw up immediately and had short term memory loss. He did recover quickly and was back to himself in a few hours .
She has tentatively cleared him to play again next week, pending no problems in rehab.
Anyway, as you guys with children can imagine its been concerning to say the least. I'm trusting her judgement and expertise. Watching him play is going to to be a different experience now knowing that if he gets another his little career will be over.
I know there are things FAR more important but believe me, at this stage of his life, nothing is more important to him. It's been his identity since he was a kid and the thought of it being taken away from him would be tragic. Obviously my wife and I are willing to make that call and will most likely do so even if he gets another one and the dr clears him again.
Never thought I'd go 'public' with family stuff on a silly website but I believe in the power of prayer.
My sons name is Jimmy and I would appreciate your prayers.

Prayers for your son. I also will pray for you and wife that you come to best decision and have courage to implement it.

I will pray for him and believe in the power of prayer. But, make sure that he has the best possible helmet you can buy and that he is tackling properly. Riddell 360 is the top rated helmet by the Virginia tech football helmet study followed by the Riddell speed and the Xenith X-2. I have had my kids use the xenith and the speed , the 360 is the best but not worth the expense at my kids ages. for high school players i would spend the $300 for it. Have him get used to using his hands more when taking on blockers and not using his head , that saves a bunch of hard shots.Tackle properly . good luck. Concussions suck, I feel your pain.

Prayers sent. With his love of the game, he should look into coaching.

Prayers sent.

I know this will be hard for your son and yourself, but he should stop while he's ahead.

GO Canes!

Several years ago I had the pleasure of meeting 4210 at a Miami scrimmage at Cobb Stadium. 4210, who's name is also Jim, was there with both his dad and his son, who was quite young at the time. I learned that this was 3 generations of devoted Cane fans, and 4210 was passing on his love of the Canes to young Jimmy the same way he had learned from his dad. We had a nice chat that day, and I came away impressed with this family I had the pleasure of meeting.

I have never had the good fortune of running into 4210 in person since that day, but with all the kibitzing he and I have done with each other on the board over the intervening years, I have learned that my first impression of him and his family was an accurate one. This is one solid guy from a solid family, and his love for his son is something that all future dads should aspire to have.

My prayers will be with you and your boy, Jim, and I will engage the services of my brother-in-law, who is the pastor of his own church, to help get some exponential prayers going from a large group of people who are closer to the Almighty then I am.

You are my Cane brother, 4210, and Godspeed to Young Jimmy!

Wow Joe, tkx. It really has been too long and I remember that day very well. I left that scrimmage realizing I had met my match in regards to Cane trivia....and I thought I was good.
Thanks Joe,much appreciated.

Mine too. That's why we're here as parents - help the kids see the long view when they can't.

You have my prayers my friend, I sincerely hope that he does not get another concussion, and as a parent of small boys (and a youth football coach) you have to be concerned. It is very hard to ask your son or any player that loves the game, to hang up the cleats, but you have to make to the right choice, as you already know the choices he makes at this stage in life will affect his entire future.
