Ok, so, to set the table: I had and continue to have low expectations for this team but it’s not as bad as it seems, yet. As follows:
Alabama loss – we simply do not belong on the same field with a top 5 team, I knew it before we played them and then we proved it.
Michigan State loss - this is the most telling game and it’s not terrible. MSU is outstanding, 6-0, they have the single best RB in college football (he broke a 130 year old record last week and he is a legit Heisman candidate thus far). The kid can do it all, I’ll take him on the Dolphins right now, next Sunday. In addition they have the fastest player in college, #8, and the kid has football speed as well as track speed (10.7 in the 100) which is devastating, he returned a kick for a TD against us and broke Larry Fitzgerald’s receiving record last week. To be able to run 22 mph is great but it’s devastating to be able to run 20 mph under-control. If you recall, we were down 4 points late, 3 mins left, and they went for it on 4th and everybody thought we stopped them, but the refs said they made it. Their coach brilliantly sensed our dejection and threw for a deep TD and we collapsed. The point is that we were in it, late, against a very talented football team.
Virginia loss- We were breaking in a freshman qb against his first real opponent! And he looked terrible until the second half when suddenly he began to see the field, build confidence, and become a college QB right in front of my eyes. He put his team in position to win and then another freshman missed a chip-shot FG, just a bad break.
Bottom line: had the kicker made that short FG vs Virginia like everyone expects of a college kicker, we would be upbeat and excited to see a freshman QB take the wheel and guide this team for the next 3 years.
As it is we are ready to burn the house down!
